The City of London was divided into wards for the purpose of government as early as Norman times. The wards had responsibility to keep the peace, supervise trade and oversee sanitation, and each ward has the right to elect an Alderman and Commoners to sit in the Court of Common Council of the Corporation of London.

One of the twenty-six wards of the City of London, bounded on the east by Cripplegate Ward, on the south by Farringdon Ward Within, on the west by Farringdon Ward Without, and extending north to the former borough of Finsbury. It was divided into an Inner and Outer Ward, the southern portion within the City walls called Aldersgate Ward Within, and the northern portion outside the walls, Aldersgate Ward Without. There is only one ward alderman. It contained five City parish churches: St Anne and St Agnes, St Leonard Foster Lane, St Mary Staining, St John Zachary and St Botolph without Aldersgate.

The archives of the ward have been deposited with the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library at various dates. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

Records of Aldersgate Ward, Corporation of London, comprising minutes and accounts, rate assessments, presentments, precepts, beadles' circuit books, coal ticket books, petitions, and inquest papers. They were catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff at various dates.

The records have been sorted into an order which reflects divisions between the different functions and operations of the organisation and its administration.

These records are available for public inspection, although records containing personal information may be subject to access restrictions.

There is a short printed history of the ward in J.C. Thornley's The Wards of the City of London, being a series of articles reprinted from the "Architect" (1919-20) pp 57-60. Other works available in the Printed Books Section of Guildhall Library and which may be useful include William Chancellor, Account of the several wards, precincts, and parishes in the City of London (1787) and A.B. Beaven, Aldermen of the City of London temp. Henry III-1912 (1908-13, 2 vols).
