Biographical history
The Association of County Councils (ACC) was formed in 1974 and succeeded the County Councils Association which was founded in 1889. The ACC represented the views and interests of the county councils of England and Wales. This was achieved through activities such as holding conferences and regular meetings, education and training, scientific/systematic research, exhibitions. the collection of statistics, providing an information service and library, holding negotiations on pay and conditions of employment, and meeting with government on particular issues. The membership extended to 46 county councils in England and Wales.
The ACC was incorporated into the Local Government Association (LGA) on 1 April 1997. The LGA itself was formed by the merger of the ACC, The Association of District Councils (ADC) and the Association of Metropolitan Authorities (AMA) to represent the interests of principal local authorities in England and Wales. The County Councils Network (CCN) formed in 1997 to address issues of specific importance to County Councils.

The records of the ACC were transferred to the London Metropolitan Archives as a gift in February 1999, and the files have been weeded, retaining a representative sample.

Local Government Reorganisation 1971-1986;

Press and Public Relations 1985-1990;
Social Service 1968-1992.
Also some papers of the Association of County Chief Executives.
The records have been catalogued retaining the original filing system used by the ACC. The records were arranged by committee and then ordered alphabetically within the filing system.

The LGA (Local Government Association) hold signed minutes of the Association of County Councils, the Association of District Councils and the Association of Metropolitan Authorities as well as ACC publications.
The University of Birmingham Library holds the spare copies of the ACC minutes and some records of the AMA.
The London Metropolitan Archives holds published minutes of the ACC (1973-1997), the County Council Association (1967-1974), the Association of Municipal Corporations (1912-1929) and also the year books for the ACC (1974-1983) and the County Councils Association (1954-1972).
Along with the minutes LMA holds subject files from the Association of District Councils (LMA/4244) and a short series of files from the Local Government Association (LMA/4222) relating to annual balances and Belgravia Holdings Limited.
