Archival history
Following Ataíde's death in 1647, his large collection of books and manuscripts were passed by inheritance to his cousins of the Castel-Melhor family. The collection was dispersed in 1878-1879 when the majority of items were sold at auction. The volume described, sometimes known as the Codex Companhia das Indias', was also titled the
Codex Lynch' following its presentation to King's College London, and is identical with lot 242 of the Castel-Melhor catalogue of 1878.
