Biographical history

Olivia Stuart Horner was the goddaughter of William Paton Ker and they corresponded frequently. Ker was Quain Professor of English Language and Literature at University College London from 1889 to 1922. Ker died at Macugnaga in 1923 while on a walking tour of Italy: Olivia was one of his party. Olivia married Ernest Barker in 1927 and had one son, Nicholas, and one daughter, Anne. Ernest Barker was knighted in 1944 and died in 1960. Olivia died in May 1976.

Olivia Stuart Horner was the goddaughter of William Paton Ker and they corresponded frequently. The bulk of the collection consists of letters from Ker to Olivia (1899-1923). There are also a number of poems and sketches by Ker, photographs by and of Ker, and miscellaneous material relating to him. In addition there are some personal papers of Olivia and her family.

The papers are arranged in the following sections: correspondence (Ref: A); personal and family papers (Ref: B); poems and sketches (Ref: C); photographs (Ref: D); miscellaneous (Ref: E).
