Baynes, son of Robert Lambert Baynes (q.v.), joined the Navy in 1866 and became a lieutenant in 1877. He served in the Pembroke, 1893 to 1895, and was promoted to captain in 1897. After attending gunnery and torpedo courses, his first active service as captain was briefly in the Minerva, 1899, and then in the Mildura, Australian Station, in 1900. He retired in 1902, advancing to the rank of rear-admiral in 1907.

Baynes, son of Robert Lambert Baynes (q.v.), joined the Navy in 1866 and became a lieutenant in 1877. He served in the Pembroke, 1893 to 1895, and was promoted to captain in 1897. The papers were presented in 1936 by Mrs H.C.A. Baynes and Miss Nias, both of whom were daughters of Admiral Sir Joseph Nias (q.v.). Another family link is that at the Battle of Navarino, 1827, Admiral Nias and Robert Lambert Baynes were First Lieutenant and Second Captain respectively in the Asia.
