Balard, 1851; Professor of Organic Chemistry at the École Supérieure de Pharmacie, 1859; chair of organic chemistry, Collège de France, 1865; member of the Academy of Medicine, 1863; entered the Academy of Sciences, 1873; Perpetual Secretary of the Academy of Sciences, 1889; Inspector General of Higher Education, 1876; elected Life Senator, 1881; Minister of Public Instruction, 1886-1887; portfolio for foreign affairs, 1895-1896; died, 1907.
