Born 1795 of humble parentage; received private tuition; contributed to Newcastle Magazine and other periodicals; published philosophical works (1831 and 1833); produced Newcastle Liberator, 1838, Northern Liberator and Champion newspapers, 1840; studied philosophy in France and Belgium; Professor of Logic and Metaphysics, Queen's College, Belfast, 1849; died 1878.
