John Bright was born into a Quaker family in Rochdale, Lancashire, in 1811. He was active in local politics and known as a staunch opponent of the Corn Laws before becoming MP for Durham in 1843. He was subsequently Liberal MP for Manchester (1847-1856), Birmingham (1858-1885) and Birmingham Central (1885-1887), serving as a cabinet minister for part of that time.

Bought from Tregaskis in 1912, about 2 months after Ludlow's books were sold at Hodgson's.

Letter from John Bright of One Ash, Rochdale, Lancashire to Professor Blackie of Edinburgh, 13 Apr 1885. 'I found your volume [Scottish Highlanders and the Land Laws (c1885)] when I went to London ... The whole story of the past and present of the Crofter class is not a little one of as melancholy character and their future is not easily perceived.'
