The Bishop of London was held to exercise responsibility for Anglican churches overseas where no other bishop had been appointed. He retained responsibility for churches in northern and central Europe until 1980, but his jurisdiction in southern Europe ceased in 1842 on the creation of the diocese of Gibraltar. In 1980, the Bishop of London divested himself of all overseas jurisdiction and a new diocese of 'Gibraltar in Europe' was established.

A chaplaincy in Riga was first established in the early nineteenth century to serve the many British sailors passing through the port. The church of Saint Saviour was constructed in 1859. Services were suspended in 1940 but resumed in 1991.

The records were deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library in 1963. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

Records of the British Church at Riga, Latvia, comprising registers of baptisms, marriages and burials, minutes and accounts of the British Poor Fund, and a volume containing historical records of the church. They were catalogued in 1963-4 by members of Guildhall Library staff.
