Joseph Brown was born in London and worked as a merchant and banker in the Mediterranean and South America; he set up a gold mining company in Melbourne, Australia, in 1852, then moved to Peru and retired to England in 1867; a talented painter. Ann Cox Brown lived in Turkey from 1841-1847 with the Hanson family.

Papers of Joseph Brown and Ann Cox Brown comprise a diary of a short tour in Turkey (1842) by Ann Cox Brown; notes on Constantinople (1843); biographical notes on Joseph and Ann Cox Brown and on Charles Hanson.

Two diaries of journeys from London to Naples and London to Constantinople were passed to University College, London.
