Born in 1876; educated at Uppingham School; engaged in ranching in British Columbia, 1893-1899; served with 1 Bn, Wiltshire Imperial Yeomanry Field Force, South Africa, 1900-1902; commissioned, 1901; left army and took up farming, [1904]; joined 15 Durham Light Infantry, 1914; commanded 11 Bn, Queen's Regt (Royal West Surrey Regt), 1915; killed in action on Western Front, 1916.

Correspondence with his family, 1915-1916, covering his service with 11 Bn, Queen's Regt (Royal West Surrey Regt), UK and Western Front, 1915-1916, with letters received by Burnaby's family following his death, 1916, and obituaries, 1916. Other papers relating to his life and career, 1876-1916, dated [1876-1916], 1927, 1931 and 1966, notably including History of the 11th Battalion, 'The Queen's' by Edward William James Neave (Brixton Free Press Printing and Advertising Co, London, 1931); photographs of Burnaby, [1876-1916].

These papers form sections 1-3 of the Burnaby family collection. Section 4 consists of the papers of his [uncle], Frederick Gustavus Burnaby.
