Burton was commissioned as first lieutenant in the Royal Marines in 1806. From 1811 to 1812 he served in the ROTA in the Channel. He was promoted to captain in 1827 and served in the Mediterranean in the ALFRED, 1831 to 1834.

The papers were purchased for the Museum in 1957 by Sir Eric Miller from a dealer, Edward Hall of Gravesend.

Papers of Capt Alfred Burton, comprising letters, 1811 to 1812, 1831 to 1834, including a series of twenty-nine to his mother for the latter period.
