Notice biographique

The aquarells were originally held in the department of Carl Joseph Gauss, Dr Buschbeck's father in law, in the University of Wurzburg. They later came into the possession of Dr Herbert Buschbeck, Gauss' son in law, and presented by Dr Buschbeck to the College in 1985.

Dr Gunther Schmidt, a gynaecologist based in Hanover and a former pupil of Dr Gauss, presented a list of descriptions, or legend, of the aquarells in 1987.

See Administrative/Biographical history.

The series originally comprised a collection of four albums containing c. 480 watercolours or aquarells by H Hoheisel of various gynaecological conditions, with patients' names, date and details of the condition, plus the legend presented by Dr Schmidt, 1930s-1940s. Some copies of published articles, in German, are also provided with the legend. There are also some mounted aquarells with details of medical condition only.

No further accruals are expected.

At some stage following their deposit the watercolours were removed from the albums and placed in card index boxes. They were placed in number order, apparently to correspond with the legend presented by Dr Schmidt. It should be noted, however, that there are several numbers on each aquarell and it may be difficult to correlate the legend with the watercolour. A small quantity of aquarells has not been filed; these have been placed in an envelope. There are also two outsize bundles containing mounted aquarells, and numbered 13-17 and 20-27 respectively, which were presumably created for display purposes (see S5/1-2).

Clinical images relating to identifiable individuals are closed for 100 years from the last date on the file. Please contact the College Archivist & Records Manager for more information archives@rcog.org.uk

A copy of the legend is filed with the aquarells and will be found at S5/10. A general index to the files listed in the catalogue of the Archives of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists is maintained in the College Archives; refer to the College Archivist.

RCOG Archives holds the College Archivist's and Deputy College Secretary's papers relating to the deposit of this collection (Refs: A10/5 and A13/7); two photographs of Dr Gauss, presented at the same time as the legend by Dr Schmidt (Ref: PH21/5).
