The City of London was divided into wards for the purpose of government as early as Norman times. The wards had responsibility to keep the peace, supervise trade and oversee sanitation, and each ward has the right to elect an Alderman and Commoners to sit in the Court of Common Council.

One of twenty-six wards of the City of London, bounded on the north by Bassishaw Ward, on the south by Cordwainer Ward, on the west by Cripplegate Ward and on the east by Coleman Street Ward. The ward contained seven City parish churches: St Lawrence Jewry; St Pancras Soper Lane; St Benet Sherehog; St Mildred Poultry; St Martin Pomeroy; St Mary Colechurch; and All Hallows, Honey Lane.

The archives of the ward have been deposited with the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library at various dates since ca.1900. Mss 36489-95 were found in a skip in 2003 and were transferred to Guildhall Library from the Sir John Soane Museum. As a result, some of the papers in Mss 36489-95 are in a poor condition. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

Records of Cheap Ward, Corporation of London. The records comprise minutes, rate assessments and accounts, presentments, papers of the volunteer association and other administrative papers. They were catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff at various dates.

The records have been sorted into an order which reflects divisions between the different functions and operations of the organisation and its administration.

These records are available for public inspection, although records containing personal information may be subject to access restrictions.

There is a short printed history of the ward in J.C. Thornley's The Wards of the City of London, being a series of articles reprinted from the "Architect" (1919-20) pp 301-4. Other works available in the Printed Books Section of Guildhall Library and which may be useful include William Chancellor, Account of the several wards, precincts, and parishes in the City of London (1787) and A.B. Beaven, Aldermen of the City of London temp. Henry III-1912 (1908-13, 2 vols).
