História biográfica

The Home Guard was first raised in May, 1940, on a semi-civilian basis in close association with the Police force, and was originally known as the Local Defence Volunteers. It was organized in companies, grouped in zones, corresponding to Police districts. The aim of the Guard was to delay an enemy invasion force, providing the Government and the regular army with time to establish a professional defence and repel the enemy invasion.

It was organized in companies, grouped in zones, corresponding to Police districts. These records were given to Guildhall Library by the War Office, via the British Records Association, in 1949. They were catalogued by Guildhall Library staff in 1950.

  • 2nd City of London (Civil Service) Battalion;
  • 6th City of London (Silvertown) Battalion;
  • 7th City of London Battalion;
  • 8th City of London (Hackney) Battalion;
  • 9th City of London (Essex: Walthamstow and Chingford) Battalion;
  • 11th City of London (Dagenham) Battalion;
  • 13th City of London (West Ham) Battalion;
  • 15th City of London (Port of London Authority) Battalion;
  • 19th City of London (2nd General Post Office) Battalion;
  • 20th City of London (3rd General Post Office) Battalion;
  • 21st City of London (4th General Post Office) Battalion;
  • 72nd City of London Battalion, C Company;
  • 102nd City of London (Rocket Anti-Aircraft Battery) Battalion.
