Manifestos, platforms, press releases, papers and miscellaneous election material from 1975 onwards issued by the Nevis Reformation Party, the People's Action Movement (Saint Kitts and Nevis), the People's Progressive Party (Anguilla), the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party and the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union. The materials here date from the period around the split with Anguilla and the subsequent move to independence and are concerned both with these issues and with the desire of Nevis for more local autonomy.

Speeches, constitutions, reports, manifestos, speeches, statements, letters and newsletters issued by the Commercial, Technical and Allied Workers' Union (Saint Vincent), the Labour Party (Saint Vincent), the Movement for National Unity, the National Progressive Workers' Union (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines), the New Democratic Party (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines), the People's Political Party of Saint Vincent, the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Human Rights Association, the St. Vincent Junior Chamber and the Youlou United Liberation Movement. They are concerned amongst other things with the problems of economic development in the islands, with the position of the country in the Caribbean as a whole and of course with the transition to independence. There are also materials issued by trades unions as well as by human rights and business groups.

The records of Sir Buchanan Scott relate to his time as general manager of the Mexican Land and Colonization Company Ltd and comprise copy out-letters 1888-90, photographs of Ensenada, California, c 1889 and rock samples.

An unpublished typescript of a work that had been accepted for presentation for a University of London PhD (external) in June 1961 entitled 'The diplomatic and economic history of the Somali Coast Protectorate from 1884 to 1897'. The author died in September 1960 and the typescript volume entitled 'The Frontiers of Somalia' has been compiled from his literary remains. The work is incomplete, as it only contains four sections of seven.

Correspondence, photographs and collected material of Una Mary Simpson (nee Roberts), relating specifically to her life in Bombay in the late 1930s, first as a teacher and later as wife and mother.

Manuscript volume relating to English territorial possessions in the East Indies, entitled 'Mémoire sur l'État actuel de l'Angleterre dans l'Inde', [1785], with corrections and notes said to be in the hand of Abbé Guillaume Thomas François Raynal (1713-1796), who altered the title to read 'Mémoire sur les possessions territoriales de l'Angleterre dans l'Inde'. The work is written on the left hand half only of each page, the other half containing [Reynal's] manuscript notes.

Constitutions, manifestos, reports, pamphlets, leaflets and membership cards, 1961-1973, issued by the Democratic Party of Swaziland, the Imbokodvo National Movement, the Ngwane National Liberatory Congress and the Swaziland Progressive Party. The materials here deal with the constitutional processes leading to independence as well as the brief period of electoral politics before the constitution was abolished in 1973.

Papers of Sir Stephen Tallents, mainly relating to to his role as Secretary of the Empire Marketing Board (EMB), including files on its origins, activities (including the 1931 'Buy British' campaign, the EMB film unit, and liaison with the Commonwealth Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Melbourne, Australia), administration and break-up. These files include reports, correspondence, notes and memoranda. There are also files containing EMB publications and press cuttings. Most of the material not directly related to EMB business consists of papers related to draft works by Tallents, particularly his book on the EMB, Empire Experiment; these files include original papers from the EMB period, 1926-1933, and draft chapters, notes and correspondence (mainly 1940s). There are also files containing papers (mainly reviews) relating to Tallents' pamphlet The Projection of England (1932) and to his period as Public Relations Officer at the Post Office, 1934-1936. There is some further material (correspondence, press cuttings, publications) on the documentary film producer John Grierson, 1933-1947. There is also a file of correspondence, 1951-1952, with Leopold Amery regarding the latter's chapter on EMB in his autobiography, My Political Life (London 1953).

Manuscript volume containing a tract entitled 'A concise account of the present state of the Spanish American colonies', [1805]. The manuscript appears to be a copy of a document written by a Spanish American, and is written with a view to invoking English intervention as a means of escape from the oppressive colonial policy of Spain, which it describes.

Papers of Alexander Walker, mid 19th century, comprising a lithograph of letters and reports written by Alexander Walker to the East India Company, 1804-1808. However, this lithograph was produced later in the 19th century; the paper at the start is watermarked 1828 and towards the end, is watermarked 1846. Walker was the political resident at Baroda, and the letters and reports related to the land, people, political climate, financial accounts, and translations of agreements drawn up by Walker, on behalf of the East India Company. They were sent to The Honourable Jonathon Duncan, Governor in Council, Bombay; James Augustus Grant Esq, Secretary to the Government, Bombay; and Francis Warden Esq, Secretary to the Government, Bombay.

Papers of Capt George Alexander Waters, consisting of logs, 1842-1843, and 1852-1861. There are loose letters, 1857-1858, including those from Captain Peel and the officers of the Naval Brigade concerning the Indian Mutiny and a book in Chinese endorsed 'taken from the house three or four miles below Nanking, 26 Aug. 1842', which is a coal-merchant's receipt book.

Records, 1744-1976, documenting the work of the Methodist Missionary Society (from the Methodist Union of 1932), and the work of its predecessor missionary societies prior to 1932 - the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society, Primitive Methodist Missionary Society, and the missionary societies of the churches that formed the United Methodist Church - and covering overseas missionary work in Europe, North America, West Indies, Africa, India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), China, Burma and Australasia.

The main series for the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society/Methodist Missionary Society include material from the home organisation in London, which directed overseas missionary affairs, including Committee minutes and papers, candidates papers, 1829-1869, finance papers, 1817-1945, and outgoing correspondence. However, the bulk of the material comprises Synod minutes and correspondence send to London from missionaries in the overseas districts, including Europe, North America, West Indies, West Africa, Central Africa, South Africa, Kenya, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Southern India, Northern India, Burma, China & South East Asia, and Australasia/South Seas. Special series include biographical material of missionaries from all denominations; missionary ships' logs and papers; and a miscellaneous assortment of notes, typescripts, unpublished articles and histories. There are approximately 2500 photographs, which cover India, Burma, Ceylon, Australasia, Africa, China and the West Indies.

The collection also includes minutes of Conference for the Wesleyan Methodist Church, 1744-1976.

Material produced by the West Indian Federal Labour Party and the West Indies Group of University Teachers, 1958-1962, 1967. Most of these items date from the West Indies Federation period.

'Notes on tactical lessons of the Palestine Rebellion, 1936' (Security B272), compiled from extracts from General Officer Commanding 5 Div's report on operations in Palestine in 1936, issued by the War Office, 1937, with covering letter to the Centre, 1990.

Papers, 1935-1972, of Wilfred Howell Whiteley, comprising his personal correspondence (1956-1972); language material on over 30 Bantu languages collected by Whiteley during his lifetime; and socio-linguistic material. Also included is a major section on Swahili (including papers on the socio-political issues raised over the adoption of Swahili as a national language).

The collection covers most aspects of Williams' life and career after 1939. Papers from her work with the British Colonial Service in Ghana, 1928-1936, were largely lost during transit to her next appointment in Singapore, but the typescript copy of her 1935 report The mortality and morbidity of the children of the Gold Coast is extant. Many papers relating to Williams' work with the British Colonial Service in Singapore, 1936-1941, were lost during the Japanese invasion, but she took a few files into Changi jail, where she wrote up the report An experiment in health work in Trengganu in 1940-1941. Notebooks, correspondence and writings made during her internment, when she was appointed as camp nutritionist by her fellow women prisoners, are also in the collection. Post-war papers cover most aspects of Williams' work, including positions with the World Health Organisation, the American University at Beirut and Tulane School of Public Health, as well as correspondence and collected reprints relating to work carried out in 'retirement' at Wyndham House, Oxford.

Zimbabwe: Political Parties Material, 1928 onwards, including manifestos, addresses, speeches, letters, conference reports, constitutions, pamphlets, leaflets, posters, newsletters, journals, press cuttings, histories, membership cards and miscellaneous electoral and promotional materials issued by the African National Council, the African National Council (Sithole), the African Progressive Party, the Centre Party (Southern Rhodesia), the Dominion Party (Rhodesia), the Front for the Liberation of Zimbabwe, the Independent Zimbabwe Group, the National Democratic Party of Southern Rhodesia, the National Front of Zimbabwe, the National Unifying Force (Southern Rhodesia), the Patriotic Front (Zimbabwe), the Rhodesian Action Party, the Rhodesia Labour Party, the Rhodesia Party, the Rhodesia Settlement Forum, the Rhodesian Front, the Southern Rhodesia Labour Party, the Southern Rhodesian African National Congress, the United African National Council, the United Conservative Party, the United National Federal Party, the Zimbabwe African National Union, ZANU-PF, the Zimbabwe African Peoples Union, the Zimbabwe Democratic Party, the Zimbabwe National Party, the Zimbabwe National People's Union, the Zimbabwe People's Army, the Zimbabwe Reformed African National Congress and the Zimbabwe United People's Organization. Any material produced by a political party originating from the geographical area that later became Zimbabwe has been placed in this collection, including parties from Southern Rhodesia prior to and during Federation and from 'Rhodesia' during UDI.
