When the Blair-Bell papers were deposited with the RCOG by the trustees of Morris Datnow's will settlement (Ref: S10) it was agreed that any papers relating to he Datnow family that were found among Blair-Bell's papers would be returned to the family. The papers now forming S21 fell into this category and the trustees of the Morris Datnow will settlement agreed that they might be deposited in the College on permanent loan for the benefit of archival research. The deposit was made in 1990.

Morris Myer Datnow (1901-1962), MB, ChB (Liverpool) 1924, MD 1928, FRCS (Ed) 1932, FRCOG 1939, was born in South Africa and trained at Cape Town University. He completed his medical training in Liverpool, where he became a member of the Liverpool university staff in 1925. There he served successively as Ethel Boyce research fellow, Samuels memorial scholar, demonstrator and sub-curator of the museum and lecturer in clinical obstetrics and gynaecology. He was appointed to the staff of the Women's Hospital, Liverpool, the Liverpool Maternity Hospital and the Royal Southern Hospital. He was married with two children. Morris Datnow became closely associated with William Blair-Bell in the research work which was going on at that time in the department, and was one of the team undertaking basic research into the nature of cancer and the place of chemotherapy in its treatment. He was to become a close friend of Blair-Bell's and was elected to deliver the third Blair-Bell Memorial Lecture in 1940 at the RCOG.

The bulk of the material comprises copies of papers produced by the College for circulation to Fellows and Members. The records have been retained here because they have not survived in the College's official papers.

Papers of Morris Myer Datnow, 1929-1946, mainly comprising copies of papers produced by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) for circulation to Fellows and Members, 1935-1946, and including letter from William Blair-Bell inviting Datnow to join the British College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (BCOG), 1929; by-laws and regulations for the admission of Fellows and Members, 1929-1935; prospectus and regulations for the Diploma, 1933; BCOG memorandum regarding a standard rate of puerperal morbidity, 1937; BCOG memorandum setting forth certain principles which in the opinion of the College should be incorporated in a National Maternity Service, 1936; RCOG Inter-departmental Committee of the Ministry of Health on Medical Schools, 1943; BCOG list of donations to the endowment fund and the decorations and furnishing fund, 1934; notice of ordinary general meeting and annual report of Council for 1945, 1946;draft reply of the Liverpool Reference Committee to the College's request for information on the role of consultants in local maternity services and ante-natal clinics, 1937.
