Dean Gooderham Acheson, US Secretary of State, 1949-1953.

Dean Gooderham Acheson, 11 Apr 1893- 12 Oct 1971, was a lawyer, author, diplomat and member of the Yale Corporation. He served for twelve years at the US Department of State as Assistant Secretary of State, 1941-1945, Under Secretary of State, 1945-1947, and Secretary of State, 1949-1953. During these years Acheson helped to forge the Truman Doctrine, 1947, the Economic Recovery Program (Marshall Plan), 1947, and North Atlantic Treaty Organization, 1949, and assisted in the development of a post-war US foreign policy towards Germany, the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China.
