Video cassette tapes accumulated by the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, relating to the history of anaesthesia in the 20th century. The tapes, made between 1982-2000, with the original films dating from 1916 to 1998, include some compilations, and comprise some black and white and silent material but focus predominantly on the latter part of the period. The subjects cover various anaesthetic drugs, equipment and techniques, and related subjects including midwifery, dentistry, paediatrics, emergency medicine, resuscitation, artificial respiration and intensive care, and the locations include various hospitals, and military situations. A series of oral history interviews feature eminent anaesthetists talking about their work. Some of the videos were made for conferences or training purposes, and some relate to the Association of Anaesthetists itself, including a video of the opening ceremony of no 9 Bedford Square.

Photographic material accumulated by the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI), relating both to the history of the AAGBI and to the wider history of anaesthesia and associated subjects from 1774 to 1997, largely comprising prints and slides, both colour and black and white, some undated, including some copies. The photographs include a series of portraits of the AAGBI Council, members of staff, and the AAGBI Group of Anaesthetists in Training (GAT) Council, and a large series of photographs used in the AAGBI publication Anaesthesia News. Material comprises typescript papers by Buxton on anaesthesia and dentistry, and notes by Buxton on The muscles of the human body grouped according to their action, with their vascular and nervous supply, C J Manning and F H Elliot (London: H K Lewis, 1875).

Papers of John Menzies Campbell, 1709-1971, comprising a typescript catalogue of books given to the Royal College of Surgeons of England; an album of press cuttings, 1930-1931; a photograph album; a personal scrap book, 1911-1981; odontological advertisements, 1709-1850; scrap book of historical dental items, 1807-1971; Glasgow directory lists of dentists [missing - May 2008]; Edinburgh directory lists of dentists, 1773-1850 [missing - May 2008]; copy of notes taken at the first known British trial where dental surgeons gave evidence, 1814; and a certifcate awarded to Menzies Campbell on becoming a corresponding member of the Swedish Dentists Society, 1965 [missing - May 2008].

Notes by John Dixon on medical matters and on things of personal interest to him such as astrology and photography spanning his entire career, 1848-1903. MS.5191 comprises more formal material, namely certificates and indentures.

Papers of E Duval, 1924, comprising 2 volumes titled MS Extracts on Teeth. E. Duval. Vol. I. 1924, and MS Extracts on Teeth. E. Duval. Vol II. 1924. Containing notes on various aspects of teeth and dentistry such as dental diseases and treatments; instrument and tooth makers; dental and odontological societies; and the obituaries of dentists and dental surgeons. The extracts are mostly taken from journals and books of the mid to late 19th century.

Notes of lectures on dental surgery, dental radiology, and oral surgery, Aberystwyth, c 1940. It contains notes on 'Inflammation', 'Dental Surgery', 'Radiology' (mostly oral and dental), 'Oral Surgery', and 'Dental Surgery Coaching Class'. There are a number of illustrative sketches among the notes.

The papers include publications, some in manuscript or draft, biographical material, material relating to committees and organisations (British Society of Periodontology, Nuffield Foundation), and correspondence. Very little remains of Fish's professional research material. Fish had worked carefully through his papers after his retirement, and many items bear lengthy comments and evaluations, personal recollections of his career and colleagues, and reflections on the state of dental health.

Papers of Eleazer Gidney, 1824, comprising a manuscript of Treatise on the Structure, Diseases and Management of the Human Teeth; and a certificate of copyright dated 14 May 1824 for registration of Treatise on the Structure, Diseases and Management of the Teeth, awarded by the Clerk of the Northern District of New York.

Papers of George Wilfred Goudge, 1924-1935, 1968-1973, reflecting his training and work as a dentist. Papers include examination papers of University of London General School, pre-medical, dental anatomy and physiology papers of Royal College of the Physicians of London and Royal College of Surgeons of England, 1924-1931; notes taken whilst studying at King's College Hospital, [1930]; personal letters from Goudge to Gwendoline Pedgrift, 1931-1932; letters from dental companies advising Goudge of locum vacancies, 1933; testimonials from former employers, 1934-1935 and Goudge's personal copies of The Strange Story of False Teeth, 1968 and The History of King's College Hospital Dental School, 1973.

Photographs include images of Goudge, students of the School of Dental Surgery, King's College Hospital, and Goudge's dental practice, 1930-1936. Associated artefacts comprise dental implements and apparatus including scalpels, clamps, mirrors, bridges, drill heads and saliva ejectors, a set of false teeth possibly belonging to Gwendoline Goudge (1911-2007), and a brass microscope, [1924-1973].

Records of the Insurance Committee for the County of London, 1912-1948, and the Inner London Executive Council, 1948-1974. The records consist of bound, printed minutes which include agenda, reports and appendices for both the Insurance Committee for the County of London, the Inner London Executive council and its constituent committees and joint committees. Most of the series of minutes are complete.

Lansbury's personal and political correspondence; correspondence between Lansbury's biographer, Raymond Postgate, and others after his death; correspondence and papers on subjects of interest to Lansbury, including schools, the Labour Party, unemployment, agriculture, India, the 1931 Cabinet Crisis, and the Metropolitan Police; photographs, personal and official, and caricatures from the press; press reviews of Lansbury's published works; printed matter, including articles, pamphlets, speeches and leaflets by or concerning Lansbury, election addresses, and personal ephemera. Volumes 1 - 26 consist of the personal and political correspondence and papers used by Lansbury's son-in-law, Raymond Postgate, in researching The Life of George Lansbury, published in 1951. These papers were presented to the British Library of Political and Economic Science by Professor Postgate in 1950. Volumes 27 - 30 were added to the collection some time later, and volume 31 consists of three files of personal correspondence which were added to the collection in 1994 and one file found in 1999.

Papers of Sir Edward Mellanby, 1896-1974, notably relating to his research interests in vitamins, nutrition and deficiency and material on his activities subsequent to his retirement as an advisor on questions of research and medical administration. May Tweedy married Edward Mellanby in 1914 and collaborated in his research throughout the rest of their lives together, as well as working independently. It can thus be seen that it is not altogether easy to differentiate between the papers of this couple; for example in Section C of Sir Edward's papers are included a number of files and volumes relating to his wife's work as his associate, while her diaries in Section E contain details of her husband's activities as well as her own. Although Lady Mellanby was Sir Edward's collaborator throughout the course of his career, her papers are on the whole distinct from his and concentrate on her work in research into dentition and dental problems. They are therefore listed separately, and the list annotated at relevant points where there is an overlap. It is clear that these papers are not a complete record of the Mellanbys' careers. It is likely that following Sir Edward Mellanby's death, when the material underwent various moves, some items were lost. However, as for 16 years he was Secretary of the Medical Research Council, the record of those years is to be found among the files of the MRC, although details of the relevant files at the MRC are not yet available.
