Willoughby Hyett Dickinson was born in 1859 at Stroud, Gloucestershire. He was knighted in 1918 and became a peer in 1930, taking the title Lord Dickinson of Painswick, where he had his family home.

In 1899 Dickinson became an Independent London County Council member for Wandsworth; his party came to be known as the Progressive Party. He was Deputy Chairman of the LCC 1892 to 1896, and Chairman in 1899. After serving as an alderman for a number of years he finally left the Council in 1907. Dickinson's career as an MP lasted from 1906 until 1918, for which period he was the Liberal member for North St Pancras; he joined the Labour Party in 1930.

Personal papers of Willoughby Hyett Dickinson, Lord Dickinson of Painwick. These papers reflect Dickinson's interests as a London County Councillor, an MP and a peer, and also his involvement in the London Liberal Federation, of which he was Chairman 1896-1918, the World Alliance for promoting International Friendship through the Churches and the League of Nations Union.

The papers are as Dickinson arranged them; with the exception of one file they are in strict chronological order-papers from 1889 are given the reference F/DCK/02, papers from 1890 the reference F/DCK/03, and so on. The exception is a file of papers concerning women's suffrage, a cause championed by Dickinson for many years: this file has the reference F/DCK/52 and is the last item on this list.
