          This collection contains Betacam cassettes of interviews and transcripts of interviews with leading political figures and members of the public from Margaret Thatcher's Premiership, 1979-1990. The subject matter ranges from issues of social history during the 1980s to ideological commentary on the nature of Thatcherism. The interviews also cover the impact of Thatcherism after Mrs Thatcher's departure from office.

          This collection comprises the following films produced and made by the Dagenham Co-operative Film Society:

          'The Seeds of Time' was the first film made by the Dagenham Film Co-operative Society. It includes scenes of local children at school and at home, and in doing so provides an insight into family life on the Becontree Estate, Dagenham (1948). This film was commissioned by and produced in association with the Borough of Dagenham.

          'Dagenham Festival' was made by the Dagenham Film Co-operative Society (1951). It includes scenes of historical pageant at Valence House, Dagenham held to celebrate the Festival of Britain, as well as other social events, sporting competitions and football matches that took place during the same year. Also depicting stalls and the procession during the Dagenham Town Show. This film was commissioned by and produced in association with the Borough of Dagenham.

          'Our Year' was made by the Dagenham Film Co-operative Society (1957). It includes scenes relating to the activities and functions of Dagenham Borough Council. Also depicts the celebrations in the borough surrounding the Dagenham Town Show. This film was commissioned by and produced in association with the Borough of Dagenham.

          'Time to Play' was made by the Dagenham Film Co-operative Society (1960). It includes scenes that show how local parks, swimming pools, athletic tracks and other leisure sites were managed and maintained by the Parks and Leisure Department of Dagenham Borough Council. This film was commissioned by and produced in association with the Borough of Dagenham.

          'Help Yourself to Health' was made by the Dagenham Film Co-operative Society (1963). It includes scenes relating to health services, such as antenatal and postnatal classes, as well as child welfare, nursery schools, school meals, immunisation, clean fuel and food hygiene initiatives that were available to residents in Dagenham. This film was commissioned by and produced in association with the Borough of Dagenham.

          'Playtime' was made by the Dagenham Film Co-operative Society (1969). It includes scenes of local children skipping, doing handstands and playing 'leap frog' in the playground at an unidentified school in Dagenham. This film was commissioned by and produced in association with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

          Papers of Percy Cyril Claude Garnham, 1966-1995, relate to the last field research project, by Garnham, to Sabah, Malaysia, in 1972 and his death in 1994. Correspondence and notes regarding the expedition to Sabah include an introduction to the expedition and photographs and scanned images of Garnham at work, undated, (Garnham 01/01); typewritten notes with handwritten corrections concerning the film 'Expedition to Borneo', [1972], (Garnham 01/02); correspondence concerning blood films and a bibliography for protozoa, insects and acoredae, 1972-1973, (Garnham 01/03); correspondence, maps, diagrams, reports and notes related to the study of orang-utans including a draft copy of 'Malaria parasity of the orang-utan (pongo pygmaeus)' by Garnham and others, 1969-1975(Garnham 01/04); notes belonging to Peters including a workbook comprising diagrams of blood cells and notes and charts regarding parasites, 1972, (Garnham 01/05); Garnham's correspondence largely with Peters regarding the continuing work concerning malaria and chimpanzees, 1966-1991,(Garnham 01/06); photographs and diagrams including a photograph of G S de Silva outside the animal clinic in Sabah and a diagram indicating zoogeographic sub regions of the oriental region, c1970, (Garnham 01/07); correspondence largely to Wallace Peters including notes on the orang-utans in Sepilok, 1966-1974 (Garnham 01/08); correspondence notably regarding pongo paper, 1966-1975, (Garnham 01/09); photographs of chimp blood slides, c1970, (Garnham 01/10); correspondence mainly addressed to Peters, including notes and graphs of orang-utan study; correspondence regarding the setting up and funding of the project; and draft paper by Garnham, N Rajapaksa, W Peters, and R Killick-Kendrick 'Malaria parasites of the orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus)', 1969-1973, (Garnham 01/11); photographs of Sepilok, application for Government grant for scientific investigations, correspondence regarding blood films, slides and orang-utans and new buildings in Sepilok, notes and contents of reels of film from Sabah and Borneo, 1969-1977 (Garnham 01/12) and a documentary film entitled 'Expedition to Borneo, 1972', comprising footage of orang-utans in their natural surroundings, transferred to DVD (Garnham 01/13).

          Papers also concern the death of Garnham and notably comprise correspondence from Claude Garnham, including a letter of thanks to Peters for writing Garnham's obituary; copies of many obituaries within various journals and newspapers including two in French; programme of service and thanksgiving for the life and work of Garnham and correspondence regarding the founding of an award in Garnham's memory, 1994-1995,(Garnham 02).

          TALLENTS, Sir Stephen George (1884-1958)

          Papers of Sir Stephen Tallents, mainly relating to to his role as Secretary of the Empire Marketing Board (EMB), including files on its origins, activities (including the 1931 'Buy British' campaign, the EMB film unit, and liaison with the Commonwealth Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Melbourne, Australia), administration and break-up. These files include reports, correspondence, notes and memoranda. There are also files containing EMB publications and press cuttings. Most of the material not directly related to EMB business consists of papers related to draft works by Tallents, particularly his book on the EMB, Empire Experiment; these files include original papers from the EMB period, 1926-1933, and draft chapters, notes and correspondence (mainly 1940s). There are also files containing papers (mainly reviews) relating to Tallents' pamphlet The Projection of England (1932) and to his period as Public Relations Officer at the Post Office, 1934-1936. There is some further material (correspondence, press cuttings, publications) on the documentary film producer John Grierson, 1933-1947. There is also a file of correspondence, 1951-1952, with Leopold Amery regarding the latter's chapter on EMB in his autobiography, My Political Life (London 1953).
