The strength of the Museum Collection lies in the range of printed ephemera and artefacts that document suffrage campaign activities, in addition there is some material relating to later 20th century women's organisations and campaigning, such as feminist activity during the 1970s and 1980s. The Museum Collection complements the range of artefacts and ephemera held in The Women's Library archive and printed collections.

A large proportion of The Women's Library Photograph Collection is comprised of portraits of famous women and significant individuals in women's campaigning. There is also a range of photographs of the birthplaces, burial places and funerals of prominent women.

The main strength of the collection is in the group of photographs that represent suffrage campaigning. The images represent a wide range of activities such as suffrage arrests, elections, petitions, demonstrations, processions and exhibitions.

The work undertaken by women on the Home and Western fronts is recorded in a number of photographs taken during the First and Second World Wars.

There is a limited, but growing, range of photographs that document post-suffrage women's campaigning such as feminist work during the 1970s and 1980s, in the form of arrests and demonstrations. There are images relating to a few of the many 20th century women's organisations and their activities, such as conferences and debates.

A small number of photographs grouped by subject illustrate women's everyday experiences in areas such as sport and education.

Although focussing on the United Kingdom, the international nature of campaigning means that a number of international women or places are represented in this collection.

As at Jan 2009, The Women's Library held approximately 1,144 postcards in the Museum Collection, with 211 postcards identified in the archives.

The earliest postcards held result from suffrage campaigning and include: documentary photographs of suffrage activities and events, and portraits of activists produced by the Women's Social and Political Union, the Women's Freedom League, and illustrated propaganda cards produced by the Artists' Suffrage League and the Suffrage Atelier. The collection also includes a significant number of anti-suffrage comic cards produced by commercial printers. There is a range of cards illustrating the campaigns for women's enfranchisement in Holland, Sweden, France and USA amongst other countries. Women's contribution to the First World War is documented in a number of postcards that represent the Scottish Women's Hospitals and other hospitals.

In addition, the collection contains contemporary postcards dating from the late 1970s to the present day. It includes a selection of satirical cartoons concerned with female characteristics and roles, a range of cards produced by women's organisations and campaign groups, particularly peace groups, cards representing campaigning on issues internationally.

Most postcards in the collection are blank on the reverse side. There are a number, such as those sent by women on the suffrage caravan tours and during the First World War, which were sent and the text may be useful for research.

Scrapbook of press cuttings and printed ephemera on a range of subjects, 1910, including the suffrage campaigns, the General Election and the death and funeral of King Edward VII. Includes commemorative postcards of the latter.

Scrapbook of press cuttings on a wide range of topics, including divorce law reform, imprisonment for debt, the suffrage campaigns, home work and the sweated trades, 'the white slave traffic', and any others.

This scrapbook consists of press cuttings, the provenance is unknown. The volume contains the bookplate of Lucy Adela Jenner and it is possible that this is an indication of the provenance of the suffrage cuttings. The suffrage press-cuttings, including from the local press in London and Hampshire are about the suffrage campaigns, 1908-1909.

Additional press-cuttings from a press agency from 1918-1919 and those relating to domestic service, appear to have been added at a later date [possibly from the same added by the Library source as those in 10/06].

The archive consists of 77 letters to Bodichon mainly from Helen Taylor, James Joseph Sylvester, Marianne North, the Hill Family and various other correspondents (1827-c 1891); offprints of papers written by the donor related to Helen Taylor (1978), James Joseph Sylvester (1981) and Marianne North (1989).

The archive consists of a Metropolitan Police notice, 1908, binding over Georgina Brackenbury to appear at court to answer the charge of 'using insulting behaviour and resisting Police' at Old Palace Yard.

The archive consists of letters from Charlotte Despard to Charles Wilson (1920-1932) ; photograph of Mrs Wilson (c. 1920); and a diary of a trip to the USSR (1930).

The letters cover the periods 1920-1922 and 1930-1932, and were written to Mr Charles Wilson of Willington, County Durham, Mr Wilson was a political activist who worked with the Durham miners, and Mrs Despard lectured to his students in 1921 and 1930. In the letters Mrs Despard refers to Mr Wilson's poetry; she also sent him a poem that she had written. She refers to her own political activities, in Ireland, lecturing for the Labour Party against British Policy in India. She also mentions several of the illnesses that were beginning to restrict severely such activities.

The archive consists of photographs and postcards relating to the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) Pilgrimage in 1913, including photographs of Eskrigge and fellow suffragists camping en route to London; letters received from individuals such as Eleanor Rathbone, and organisations, such as the Canning Town Settlement, relating to her suffrage campaigning and social welfare work; and biographical information about Eskrigge.

The archive consists of photocopies of letters sent to Fraenkel by Pankhurst mainly concerned with an exhibition of the latter's paintings which Elsa organised and which was held in London in 1959. Includes a pastel drawing of Pankhurst by Fraenkel (c.1957).

The archive consists of a manuscript memoir headed 'Manchester, 19 Jun 1909: Women's Social & Political Union (WSPU) Drum and Fife'. Details journey from London to Manchester and back for the meeting to welcome Miss Patricia Woodlock, provides an account of the meeting, the actions of the police and anti-suffragists, and gives Florence's opinions on the suffrage issue; also contains an account of learning to play the fife with the WSPU Drum & Fife Band and a list of the members of the Band.

The archive consists of notes for speeches, correspondence, press cuttings, Women's Social and Political Union papers, family records including photographs and objects, papers related to the arrest and imprisonment of both Franklin and Duval.

The archive consists of one folder, a diary entitled 'The Price of Liberty'.

The 1917 diary entries were written on the ' Mission to the Women of Russia'. The 1917 entries are flanked by an 'introduction' and by discursive notes, written in the 1960s, on the cultural and historical links of Russia and Great Britain, the fate of the Women's Battalions, an essay on Mazzini, and a concluding section on the Price of Library.

The diary refers to the atmosphere and events in St Petersburg and Moscow, also the meetings addressed by Jessie Kenney and Mrs Pankhurst. They met the leader of one of the Women's Battalions, formed to defend Russia against invasion, and many notables including Kerensky, Prince Youssoupoff, and Plekhanov, the leader of the Menshevik Party.

The diary includes a postcard, description given below [7JKE/3].

The archive consists of four copies of the newsletter of the Suffragette Fellowship (1946-1966); roll of honour of Suffragette Prisoners 1905-1914 (undated, c 1960), summons and press cuttings relating her imprisonment and suffrage including postcard from Mrs Pankhurst (1907); pamphlet (1957); photographs of Lacon (1950); press cutting on Lacon and ephemera related to celebrations of suffrage activities (1960s-1970s).

The archive consists of letters from Louisa to her mother Elizabeth Garrett Anderson from Holloway, letters to her family from the Women's Hospital Corps, Paris during First World War, a scrapbook relating to Endell Street Military Hospital and photographs, 1879-1943.

The archive originally consisted of correspondence and objects. At some date the correspondence between Mrs Taylor and her daughter Dr Dorothea Taylor c.1912, was moved to Autograph Letter Collection Volume 9/26. In 2000 the objects were catalogued as part of the artefacts cataloguing project by Catherine Marshall.

The archive consists of two commonplace books kept by Margaret Heitland before her marriage, (1875 and 1884-1926); a register of articles received for publication in Queen Magazine (1909-1915); correspondence (including a letter from author Charlotte M Yonge); press cuttings and photographs.

Typescript of Mary Sheepshank's autobiography 'The Long Day Ended' (1880s-1930s). These reminiscences provide interesting descriptions of South America in the 1920s, and of a chapter in the history of the Ukrainian fight for independence.

The archive consists of two parts.

Part 1 consists of records collated during Billington-Grieg's membership of a large number of international women's organisations, associated correspondence, drafts of papers presented at conferences, as well as publications received from the organisations. In addition there are papers related to her unpublished biography of Charlotte Despard.

Billington Grieg was a keen suffrage historian, and her historical writings on suffrage (as well as papers reflecting her own suffrage activism) are represented in her archive.

The Cavendish-Bentinck Library contains many pre-1850 books, pamphlets and periodicals. There are many seventeenth and eighteenth century classic publications, such as Richard Brathwaite's The English gentlewoman: drawne out to the full body and Look ere you leap: or, A history of the lives and intrigues of leud women; first editions of publications by Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Shelley, the Brontes, Fanny Burney, Maria Edgeworth, George Eliot, Virginia Woolf and many others. The periodical holdings include The Lady's magazine 1760-1839 and The Englishwoman's domestic magazine 1852-1879. Cookery and household management books include Hannah Wolley's The Queen-like closet, 1675, and Mrs Beeton's Book of household management, 1861. The collection is also strong on material relating to the suffrage campaigns, including many rare pamphlets. Newly acquired material was added to the collection until the 1950s - hence this collection houses most of the The Women's Library's printed holdings dating from 1600 to 1850. The Cavendish-Bentinck collection is catalogued on The Women's Library's online catalogue and volumes can be ordered by completing a Collections order slip and consulted in the Reading Room. Due to the age and fragility of most of the material in the Cavendish-Bentinck collection no photocopying is permitted.

The Sadd Brown Library was founded in 1939 in memory of Myra Sadd Brown, and contains books and periodicals about, and often by, women of the Commonwealth. It covers colonial pioneers to modern day freedom fighters, as well as investigations of women's political and economic advancement and their positions in other societies and religions. For example it includes conference reports of the British Commonwealth League from 1925 to 1938 which vividly reveal the feminist concerns of pre-war generation, some issues having a contemporary resonance many decades later.The Library was the tribute of her suffrage colleagues to Myra Sadd Brown and it continues to grow with support from her family and the Commonwealth Countries League. The collection includes some late nineteenth century publications, such as Olive Schreiner's Trooper Peter Halket of Mashonaland, 1897, but most of the collection dates from the twentieth century. Some examples of books and periodicals in the Sadd Brown Library include The African child by Evelyn Sharp 1931, Women living under Muslim laws newsheet, Pakistan 1992-, Onions are my husband: survival and accumulation by West African market women by Gracia Clark, 1994 and Race relations news, South Africa 1947-1955.

Political papers of Alan Crosland Graham. The early papers refer to his appointment as private secretary to the Earl of Balfour, Secretary of State for War, from 1925 to 1929, and Viscount Halisham, President of the Council, from 1932 to 1935, and his parliamentary contests at Stirling, Denbigh, Darwen and Wirral. During World War Two his papers illustrate an involvement in anti-Nazi and anti-Communist groups in Europe, and there are files relating to Austria, Poland, France and the Never Again Committee.

Material deposited by Dr Nina Fishman relating to the organisation and administration of the political groups 'Tactical Voting 87' and 'Common Voice', 1983-1992, comprising documents setting out aims and issues, regulations and legal matters, press releases, letters and articles written to national newspapers, press cuttings on tactical voting and electoral reform, material concerning funding, letters of support from the public, data and letters relating to constituency monitoring, pamphlets, and ephemera.
