Biographical history

The Ethics (or Ethical) Committee was established in 1982 to consider the ethical aspects and legal implications of matters of concern affecting the practice of obstetrics and gynaecology. It has considered a wide range of issues such as abortion, assisted reproduction, sex selection, female genital mutilation, the use of fetuses for research, gene therapy, court-authorised obstetric intervention, patient consent, personal health information and critical care decisions.

Archival history

Several early catalogues were not transferred and are no longer extant.

Records of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists' Ethics Committee, 1981-2005, comprising agenda, minutes, papers and correspondence; reports on specific issues.

Records are transferred by the Post-Graduate Training department and disposed of according to Disposal Agreement No 2 between the Head of Postgraduate Training and the College Archivist.

This material is no longer created as a separate series; copy minutes are now submitted to and retained with Council minutes and papers at A2.

An alphabetical list of founder Members is available from the College Archivist. This is list has been copied from the first Annual Report 1929-1930 and there is also a copy from the fifth Annual Report 1934.

The College Archives holds card indexes of deceased and living MRCOG holders between 1929 and 1998. The indexes note the date of admission to the MRCOG
