The Hospital opened as the 'Hospital for Invalided Gentlewomen' in 1850, and was renamed following Florence Nightingale's rise to prominence in the mid-1850's. She was Chief Superintendent at the Hospital in 1853.

As well as providing medical care to women who were recommended to the hospital as having insufficient means to pay for their own treatment, though being of good character, the hospital managed properties in the Lisson Grove area and elsewhere in London.

Records of the Florence Nightingale Hospital for Gentlewomen, 1892-1953, including annual reports, administrative files including correspondence and requisitions, accounts, papers regarding legacies and bequests and legal papers relating to property transactions. There are no surviving medical or patient records for this hospital.

The records are arranged as follows: A = Administration, D = Financial records, F = Legal records.

These records are open to public inspection, although under section 5(4) of the 1958 Public Records Act administrative records are closed for 30 years and patient records for 100 years.
