Siegmund Heinrich Foulkes, FRCPsych (1898-1976), was a psychoanalyst, a pioneer of group analytic psychotherapy and founder of the Group-Analytic Society (London). Elizabeth Therese Fanny Foulkes (née Marx) was his third wife and also a relative. She was a co-founder of the Group-Analytic Society (London) and deeply involved in group analytic psychotherapy. They were both German Jews who emigrated to England in the 1930s.

The first deposit of SH Foulkes' (SHF) papers was given to the Wellcome Library by his widow, Elizabeth Foulkes (ETF), in 1991. In 1993 the archive of the Group Analytic Society (GAS), the Institute of Group Analysis (IGA), and the Trust for Group Analysis (TGA) was also deposited (this is catalogued as SA/GAS). In 2004, following the death of ETF, the rest of SHF's papers, additional papers relating to GAS and IGA, and ETF's papers were transferred to the Wellcome Library.

Papers, [1870]-2004, relating to Elizabeth Therese Fanny Foulkes and Siegmund Heinrich Foulkes's activities in clinical practice, teaching and lecturing, writing and publication, and participation in societies and associations including the Group Analytic Society (GAS) and Institute of Group Analysis (IGA). They also contain much material of a personal nature such as photographs, correspondence, and family history. The papers date from about the 1870s until ETF's death in 2004.

Material in the Foulkes collection has been acquired and catalogued in two stages. The first accession consisted primarily of SHF's professional papers while the second accession contained many personal papers (held back by ETF after his death) as well as the professional and personal papers of ETF. As the initial accession contained only SHF's papers, this has affected the structure and layout of the catalogue which is somewhat biased towards SHF. Throughout this catalogue, coherent files have been treated as such and original file titles have been indicated in inverted commas where these appear to represent working, rather than later, compilations. All other titles have been assigned by the archivist.

Many files in section C and some in sections D, E, and F are closed. Full details are given in the catalogue entries for relevant files. Due to the sensitive nature of Foulkes' work, attention is drawn to the Wellcome Library rule that readers shall not publish or communicate to any other person the names or other particulars of individuals named in records which contain information of a private or sensitive nature.

Photocopies/photographs/microfilm are supplied for private research only at the Archivist's discretion. Please note that material may be unsuitable for copying on conservation grounds, and that photographs cannot be photocopied in any circumstances. Readers are restricted to 100 photocopies in twelve months. Researchers who wish to publish material must seek copyright permission from the copyright owner. The papers of Siegmund Heinrich Foulkes and Elizabeth Therese Fanny Foulkes which relate to their involvement with GAS and IGA are held in SA/GAS. Most of the papers of GAS and IGA have been catalogued separately as SA/GAS. For the sake of consistency, documents concerning GAS and IGA in SHF and ETF's papers have been added to SA/GAS and documents concerning other areas of SHF and ETF's lives have been taken from SA/GAS and added to PP/SHF. There is much overlap between the two collections and readers are advised to consult both. Audio material relating to this collection is held by the Moving Image and Sound Library.
