Marion Valerie Friedmann was born in 1918, and was a founder member of the Liberal Party of South Africa. The multiracial Liberal Party of South Africa was founded in 1954, and was forced to disband under the Prohibition of Political Interference Act of 1968.

Marion Valerie Friedmann was born in 1918, and was a founder member of the Liberal Party of South Africa. The multiracial Liberal Party of South Africa was founded in 1954, and was forced to disband under the Prohibition of Political Interference Act of 1968.

Papers of Marion Valerie Friedmann on South African politics, 1957-1962, comprising: papers on the Liberal Party of South Africa, 1954-1963 including membership forms and badges, election posters and statements; writings by Marion Friedmann, including life of Stephen Nkadimeng, fragment of typescript on police intimidation of Africans, potted biography of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, and article on African barrister Duma Nokwe; correspondence, 1961-1963, mainly on Liberal Party affairs, also including correspondence with Sir Hugh Lucas-Tooth MP on conditions in South Africa; photographs of Walter Sisulu and others; Court Records, including papers on case of Percy J Hodgson v Minister of Justice, on the house arrest of Hodgson, 1962, notice to Walter Sisulu under the terms of the Suppression of Communism Act, text of judgement in case Siwele H M Ganyile v Minister of Jusitice about banning notice, 1961, and judgement in the case of The State v Duma Nokwe and others, 1962; periodicals: copies of Assagai, 1963, Contact, 1960-1963, Fighting Talk, 1961-1962, Liberal News, 1963, Liberal Opinion, 1963, and New African, 1963; miscellaneous material on the Anti-Apartheid Movement, Chief Albert Luthuli, 1960, the African National Congress (ANC), the Capricorn Africa Society, 1953, and the Civil Rights League; press cuttings on South Africa.
