Historia biográfica

Hackney and East London Synagogue has its origins in prayer meetings held at a private house from 1881. By 1885 funds had been raised to construct a Synagogue on Devonshire Road (now known as Brenthouse Road), which was completed in 1897. At this date it was known as South Hackney Synagogue and became a constitutent of the United Synagogue. In 1936 the Synagogue was enlarged and the name changed to Hackney Synagogue. Since 1993 it has been known as the Hackney and East London Synagogue.

Hackney and East London Synagogue has its origins in prayer meetings held at a private house from 1881. Deposited as part of a larger accession of material from the United Synagogue in 2009 and 2010.

Records of the Hackney and East London Synagogue including Board of Management minute book; committee meeting minute books; administrative correspondence; legal papers; insurance policies; agreements; financial accounts; membership registers; registers of seatholders; marriage registers [kethubot]; religious class registers; decorated prayer book; history of the Hackney Synagogue by Reverend Dr Barnett Joseph; orders of service; newsletters; fundraising; papers of the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women Hackney Branch; youth activities; plan of the seating galleries; plan of the Synagogue; and photographs.

The records have been divided into 5 sections:
