William Herbert was an antiquarian writer and Librarian of the Guildhall from 1828 to 1845. He published the History of the twelve great livery companies, (London, 1837), Antiquities of the Inns of Court and Chancery, (Vernor and Hood, London, 1804), and similar works.

William Herbert was an antiquarian writer and Librarian of the Guildhall from 1828 to 1845. He published the History of the twelve great livery companies, (London, 1837), Antiquities of the Inns of Court and Chancery, (Vernor and Hood, London, 1804), and similar works.
The collection contains two volumes. Volume one is entitled, 'Aboriginal State' and volume two, 'Improved Modern State'.
Access to the items in the collection is unrestricted for the purpose of private study and personal research within the controlled environment and restrictions of the Library's Palaeography Room Uncatalogued material may not be seen. Please contact the University Archivist for details.
Copies may be made, subject to the condition of the original. Copying must be undertaken by the Palaeography Room staff, who will need a minimum of 24 hours to process requests.

The Guildhall Library, London, holds autobiographical papers, 1772-1845; East Sussex Record Office, Lewes, has antiquarian notebooks relating to Hastings Castle and Hastings Rape, 1820-1825 (Ref: AMS 6113); Lambeth Palace Library, London, contains letters to C Bedford relating to his book on Lambeth Palace, 1805-1806 (Ref: MS 2872).
