'The Office of a Constable' written by Sir Francis Bacon, contains a speech by Bacon and four other items: ff 14: 'A letter of Advice written to the lower house of Parliament by Sir E.C'; ff 33: 'Spoken to both the houses of Parliament assembled at Dublin by the Lord Deputie of Ireland [Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford] 15 July 1634'; ff 46: 'A Speech delivered in the Starre Chamber by Sir Francis Bacon to the Judges in the last daye of Trinity terme 1617 [8 July]'; ff 53: 'The Commons declarations and impeachments against the Duke of Buckingham'; ff 73: 'The Humble Answere and Plea of George Duke of Buckingham to the declaration ... made against him ... by the Commons house of Parliament'.

The correspondence in this collection is largely concerned with domestic and personal details of the lives of the Macaulay and Booth families. There are some letters, particularly between Charles and Alfred Booth that relate to the business of their Company. The covering dates of the papers are 1799 to 1967. Most of the Macaulay papers fall within the years 1800-1850 and most of the Booth papers fall within 1860-1916.

The collection contains items of correspondence from 359 identified people. The letters were sent by and sent to members of the Macaulay (mainly between 1800 and 1850) and Booth (mainly between 1860 and 1916) families and cover a multitude of different subjects.

The miscellaneous papers comprising the second part of the collection includes family deeds, indentures, genealogical information, newspaper cuttings, and fragments and copies of further correspondence. The papers also include: a retrospectively compiled diary of Hester Emily Booth (Charles Booth's sister), dated 1842-1905; notes and drafts of essays by Charles Booth relating to religious questions, political economy, social welfare, Irish land laws and Home Rule, and Life and Labour; obituaries of Charles Booth; drafts of essays and novels by Mary Catherine Booth; papers relating to the Thringstone Trust, founded by Charles Booth in 1911; travel diaries by Charles Booth, 1862; and sketches and drawings made by Charles Booth, 1852-1884. There are also fourteen family photographs and negatives. The collection also contains seven volumes of a family magazine, The Colony, that aimed to represent high-standards of social conscience and discussed issues such as universal suffrage and religion, 1866-1871.

These papers are largely concerned with Humphreys' involvement in the development and promotion of Latin American Studies in Britain. The collection is roughly divided into three series. The 'correspondence' section includes letters from a variety of people, including British historians such as Hugh Hale Bellot and historians of Latin America and the USA (1934 to 1982). Amongst the papers of committees and conferences promoting Latin American Studies in Great Britain in the second section are: papers of the University College London Advisory Committee and the University Grants Committee on Latin American Studies; correspondence relating to committees; interview papers and reports. The third section contains items created by Professor Humphreys including unpublished papers, and printed newspaper articles.

Heberden's papers, c.1744 - [1784], include his notes on the history and cure of diseases, 1782, thought to be the original manuscript for his Commentaries on the History and Cure of Diseases (1802), and his index of the history of disease, [1784] (date '22 Maii 1784' is written at the end of the volume), containing the notes from which his Commentaries were drawn up; Manuscript of his Goulstonian Lectures, 1749, in Heberden's hand; Index of materia medica containing remedies and their effects compiled by Heberden from his case notes, with additional notes on the opposite pages by his son, William Heberden the younger, 18th century. The collection also includes manuscript volumes attributed to Heberden's hand, 'An Introduction to the Study of Physic', c.1744-1755; 'Preliminary Observations', c.1782; 'A Collection of Essays', 18th century (although it is now thought that this manuscript is definitely not in Heberden's hand).

Macmichael's papers, 1827-1830, consist of his author's copies of The Gold-Headed Cane, interleaved with notes in his hand, 1827 (MS113) and the Lives of British Physicians, with additional notes about William Harvey in his hand, 1830 (MS439).

Western Manuscripts, c 1250-19th century, including receipt books (domestic medical remedies and culinary recipes), illuminated psalters and prayer books, case notes and prescription books. highlights include: the Wilton Psalter, c 1250; a 15th century copy of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales; medical receipt and prescription books from the 17th century.

Papers of Robert Rutson James, 1933-1945, comprising transcripts of sources relating to 17th and 18th century surgeons: transcripts of the Admiralty Surgeon's Passing Certificates, 1933-1934; transcripts of the Barber Surgeon's Apprentice Books, 1936; transcripts of the Freemen of the Barber Surgeon's Company, c 1936; transcripts of the Warden's Great Account Book, c 1930s; transcripts of the Lambeth Archbishop's Licences, 1937; transcripts of Fleet Prison Marriage Registers, 1930s-1940s; transcripts of Medical Wills, 1933; transcripts of the List of Marriage Licences from the Harleian Society, including some medical wills, 1933-1945; and transcripts of the St George's Hospital Pupil Register, c 1930.

Scientific and other papers sent to the Royal Society, presented at meetings of Fellows, or commissioned by the Society. They form a complementary series to the Early Letters, both of which were superseded by the Letters and Papers. Many of these items, referred to as the 'Guard Books', are duplicated in the Register Book of the Society. The classification is a simplified form of the 'Philosophical Transactions' abridgment by John Lowthorp. This arrangement was completed in 1741 by Thomas Birch. The majority of the papers in these volumes are manuscript, but a few printed documents occur throughout the series. Some of the papers are earlier in date than the grant on 15 July 1662 of the First Charter to the Society. The Committee of Trades seems to have been associated with the earlier meetings of those philosophers who subsequently became Fellows, and produced a number of practical papers, some of which were written in 1639 and which are mostly found in Volume 3(i). There are still earlier documents, mostly in Volume 25, which may have been included in the gift, in 1667, of the Arundel Library.

The collection mainly consists of a set of Isabel Fry's personal diaries and notebooks dating from 1878-1958. These are supplemented by letters to her friend Eugénie Dubois, c1930-1958, and a few publications and photographs. The diaries reflect all aspects of her life and career including her teaching activities and educational ideas; her preoccupations with political and social affairs, including political reform and emancipation in the East and in Turkey and Persia; her friendships with liberal intellectuals; and her involvement with anti-militarist movements, slum clearance, socialism and feminism. Also included are details of her relationship with her family, friends and their wider social circle.

Papers of Richard Goodings, comprising research material, notes and drafts, mainly relating to Goodings' work on a history of the Institute. The papers include some original correspondence of Percy Nunn relating to the transfer of the Institute from the London County Council to the University of London, 1927-1932. Also included are photocopies of articles by Goodings added to the collection [by the Archivist] at a later date and some original papers relating to the Institute at the time of Goodings' employment, 1960s.
