The book comprises detailed letters written by Eric Holt-Wilson to his father, the Reverend Thomas Holt-Wilson, during the Second Boer War, Jul 1899-Aug 1902, describing: preparations before the outbreak of war, Jul-Oct, 1899; establishing defences at De Aar, Cape Colony, Oct-Nov 1899; battles at Modder River, Magersfontein and Paardeberg Drift under FM Lord Paul Methuen, Nov 1899-March 1900; constructing defences and maintaining the railway in the Johannesberg-Pretoria region under FM Lord Frederick Sleigh Roberts and Maj Gen Ian Hamilton, Apr-Dec 1900; and in Bloemfontein and Springfontein, Dec 1900-Aug 1902.
