William Hurt was a merchant of Bishopsgate and official of the East India Company, while his nephew Thomas Rogers was a factor for the Company. Although Hurt and Rogers were both employed by the East India Company, and Rogers' letters contain much about the Company's business, they appear to be private correspondence.

Although Hurt and Rogers were both employed by the East India Company, and Rogers' letters contain much about the Company's business, they appear to be private correspondence.
The letters were copied in 1992 for Guildhall Library by a private individual who owns the original letters which came from the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
