Records of the Belmont Synagogue, covering the whole range of activities undertaken by the Synagogue. In particular, the administration is well represented with minutes, agendas and correspondence from all the main committees; the Council of Management, Membership, Building Fund, Ladies Guild, Parents Association, Education and Social Activity Group.

Information on the religious life can be gleaned from files on Rabbi selection, Bat Chayil Ceremony, Yom Naroim and the Sefer Torah as well as from the substantial photographic collection which also presents a good picture of the social side of the community.

Papers of Michael Ward, member of the Greater London Council (GLC). The records are representative of the sort of organisations and issues Michael Ward dealt with in his capacity as Chair of the Industry and Employment Committee of the Greater London Council in the 1980s. The files of correspondence, minutes, funding applications and feasibility studies show that the Committee was particularly involved with issuing grants to worthy projects, supporting workers in disputes with employers, assessing the impact of new building developments in London, creating schemes, such as co-operatives, to assist people to work together and ensuring that all Londoners were fairly represented in the workplace.

Michael Ward was also Chair of the Enterprise Board Selection Panel, part of the Greater London Enterprise Board. GLEB was set up in 1982 to intervene and take initiatives to preserve and create long-term jobs for Londoners by regenerating the capital's industrial base. It aimed to discover and develop means of democratising London's economy. This collection contains its memorandum and articles of association together with correspondence, some publications and press releases.

The collection reflects some of the beliefs held by the GLC in general and not just those of the Committees Michael Ward sat on. For example, its enthusiasm for fair trade in Third World countries, the importance of equal opportunities at work and the value of the pedestrian and residential areas in cities

Records of the Maccabi Union of Great Britain, 1943-2002. Please note written permission from the depositors is required to access these records.

This collection reflects how the Maccabi organisation functions on an international, European and national level. The hierarchy of authority is evident in the way the series of records have been organised. The Maccabi World Union, International Maccabiah Committee and European Maccabi Confederation are represented in the holdings mostly through official reports. However, although the records for the Maccabi Union of Great Britain start with the official minutes of what was to become the National Executive Committee, it is the personal correspondence from key figures in the Union, for example Eric and Beryl Rayman, which greatly enhance our understanding of this organisation.

It is apparent from the records that the Maccabi Union GB has many related parts to it. This demonstrates the level of organisation involved and fund raising necessary to run a major youth movement. The Maccabi Foundation, an independant body, has, as its main purpose, a funding function for Maccabi activities. This itself was previously linked to a company called Maccabi Stadium Limited. The Maccad Agency Limited, also no longer functioning, charged commission from companies to advertise in Maccabi Union publications. This commission was most likely ploughed back into the Union's activities.

The Maccabi Century Club took over the activities of the Sportsmen's Century Club in 1992. This club was founded by generous, wealthy men who ran one fundraising event per year at the Dorchester Hotel. The "Century" referred to the fact that this stag dinner function cost 100 pounds per head for 100 people. By 1992 the cost of the ticket had risen to 500 pounds and the number of attendees increased. Fine speakers, fine food and wine and top names in cabaret ensured a memorable evening. Over 33 years these dinners raised over 1,000,000 pounds to keep the Maccabi movement alive. The Maccabi Century Club continued this work with a slightly altered structure, that is, that the fundraising work is shared with the Maccabi Centurions. This Club is no longer operating.

By far the most comprehensive series of records is that of sports events and games. The Maccabiah is covered from the 3rd to the 16th Games. A set of photographs of the 1950 Games is of particular interest as it shows not only the opening cermonies in Israel but members of the team from Great Britain and the competitors as they take part.

The involvement of the Maccabi Union Great Britain in the Maccabiah, European and North American Games is known to us mainly through the personal papers of Ken Gradon who served the Union in many capacities. Ken Gradon was a key figure in the development of the Maccabi Union because he has served at all levels. He was, among other roles, President of the Maccabi Union Great Britain, Honorary President of the European Maccabi Games, a member of the International Maccabiah Committee on a personal basis, nominated to stand for committees of the Maccabi World Union and standing on the British Maccabiah Organising Committee.

The photographic collection includes meetings, conferences, dinners and other events held between the 1940s and 1960s with particular reference to Maccabi Association London depicting speakers, audiences and assembled groups, the Jewish Welfare Unit ambulances, and the opening of the Maccabi running track at Hendon Stadium in 1953. Among the ephemera there are football league trophies, sports caps and T-shirts, commemorative pennants, banners and plaques.

Besides the Maccabiah, individual sports are represented through the files of affiliated sports groups such as the Maccabi Southern Football League and Wingate Football Club, as well as the Union's own records of certain sports and their annual tournaments, such as table tennis, athletics and cricket.

Hand written news letters and correspondence to Hymen Morris, a pupil at Jews' Free School until 1874. The letters are from Jacob Moses, a fellow pupil and then teacher at the school.

This is a collection of records of various companies involved in the trading of Ceylon [now Sri Lanka] and Indian teas. It consists of import registers for an un-named company, auction catalogues for private trade teas and photographs of tea plantations, possibly in Ceylon, and the offices and staff of R.M. Holborn and Sons Limited, tea and coffee merchants.

Records relating to the Jews' Free School and former teachers at the school. This deposit contains letters, school magazines, newspaper cuttings and an attendance register. Some material relates to Anglo-Jewish historian Myer David Davis (also spelt Davies), who started his career as a teacher at the Jews' Free School as Talmud Torah master.

Records of the London Diocesan Council for Welcare, 1915-1994, comprising annual reports for the Council and various local branch organisations including Westminster Wel-Care Association. Also correspondence relating to the Victoria Emergency Home, 76 Warwick Way.

Papers of 'The Museum Of ...' temporary museum project. The collection holds material from four of the five "museums" that together formed The Museum Of. These are: The Museum of Collectors, The Museum of Me, The Museum of Emotions and The Museum of the River Thames. The collection holds no records for The Museum of the Unknown.

The Museum of Collectors (Nov 1998 - Mar 1999): The Museum of Collectors looked at who collects, what people collect and why? It housed a display of forty-two local people's collections, everything from rejection letters and snow domes to snails and monsters. The collections were displayed in consultation with the collectors by an interdisciplinary team. The records held in the collection include: Glassine pockets containing items collected by visitors to the museum, photos and text relating to collectors exhibiting at the museum and advertising material.

The Museum of Me (May 1999 - Oct 1999): The Museum of Me combined art works that looked at the self with a chance for visitors to experience, record and display aspects of themselves as they travelled around the space. Responding to input from artists, poets, performers, psychologists, designers and anthropologists, each visitor was given the opportunity to contribute to the making of The Museum Of Me by creating their own personal museum exhibits during their visit. The records held in the collection include: Tin Cans containing items belonging to visitors, miniature glass bottles each containing a written "secret", large glass bottles containing multiple "secrets", a range of labels on which visitors wrote down various aspects of themselves and their experiences, black and white portrait photographs and a selection of emphemera including a promotional t-shirt and several diaries containing handwritten comments by visitors filled in about days that were important to them.

The Museum of Emotions (Feb 2000 - Jun 2000): The Museum of Emotions asked the question where and how do we express our emotions? Ten artists were commissioned to evoke different emotions through creating a series of interactive environments. An ephemeral experience created by light, sound and installation explored how much feeling is lost, found and expressed in the context of the museum. Records for this collection include: plastic bottles each labelled with a visitor's response to the question "What makes you cry?", a large hardback book containing visitors comments on the theme of love and a number of advertising leaflets.

The Museum of The River Thames (March 2001 - July 2001): The Museum of The River Thames focused on the River Thames as the largest public space in London. Creating a journey from the Bargehouse to the river and back again The Museum of the River Thames reflected on the experiences of those people and places, that told a story of their environment and personal relationship with the river. The Museum included collaboration with: The London Rivers Authority, The Thames Explorer Trust, The Millennium Bridge Trust, Platform and The Museum of London. The collections includes: Origami Boats made by visitors to the Museum, drawings and comments on possible uses for the space if the River Thames did not exist and a variety of objects found in the river.

The final series is entitled "Marketing and Administration" and this includes advertising material relating to all five of the "museums" and a press pack that sets out the aims and intentions of the project, detailing the nature of each "museum" and setting out how the projects developed and progressed.

Records of John Groom's Association for Disabled People and predecessor organisations. This collection contains administrative material for John Grooms Association itself and all its major projects, including minutes and financial material; publications produced by the charity, including appeal literature and advertisements; histories of John Groom and his charity; a large collection of photographs showing all aspects of the association with many photographs of residents, workers, children and others who have benefited from its work; films and videotapes produced by the charity along with video and audio tapes of advertisements and reports on the charity's work featured on television and radio programmes; samples of flowers made by the workers at Edgware and the tools used to make them.

Photographs and sketches of the Clerkenwell area by Sylvia Turtle, showing the development of the area including images of storm damage in Charterhouse Square in 1987 and a poster produced during office developments in the 1990's showing a skull formed out of buildings and the words 'Death by Development'.

The collection also includes a letter written in 1941 to Sylvia Turtle's aunt from Simpkin Marshall Book Centre regarding their old fashioned service and their 'Dickensian Staff' and displaying War time spirit '... to show the Germans that they cannot part old friends with their bombs, and fires, and bloody murder.'

This collection comprises slides used by Ivor Pfuell in his lectures on the history and development of London. The slides were collected during the 1970s and 1980s, although they depict London locations and landmarks through the ages.

Records of London South Bank Careers, 1968-2002. This collection contains the records of the Chief Executive and Executive Director of Education (Operations). It includes management minutes, policy and correspondence files relating to the provision of independent Careers Services for young people in the London Boroughs of Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark, and the involvement of the LSBC in national developments in Careers Service provision. Correspondence also includes local projects including work on housing estates, with local schools, and 'Skills for the Millenium' which looked at the employment benefits brought to Greenwich by the Millenium Dome, and Government funded initiatives including the 'Learning Card' and projects such as 'New Deal' which sought to provide career 'Gateways' for disaffected young people.

The Chief Executive and Executive Director's correspondence also highlights the importance which partnerships with local schools, employers, local authorities, other Careers Services and Training and Enterprise Councils, had in supporting bids for funding projects and developing careers provision across the London area.

The collection includes publications and web site pages produced by the company showing the distinctive public image of the company, and the range of services which were available. The photographs cover career service company launch, outreach and party events

The collection also covers former Careers Services which included the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) and South Thames Careers Limited, which operated in the four boroughs prior to the LSBC. The correspondence, photographs and publications detail their work and charts the establishment of LSBC through competitive bidding.

Records of Ind Coope Limited, brewers, 1850-1985. This collection contains corporate records including trading and supply agreements with other organisations such as Wembley Stadium, Pleasure Foods Ltd and various public houses; papers relating to loans and papers relating to income bonds.

Also documents relating to individual public houses and off-licences in Kensington, Poplar, Woolwich, Stepney, City of London, Holborn, Islington, Hackney, Lambeth, Westminster and Newham.

Records of Curtis Nicholson Limited, brewers, 1938-1958. This collection comprises the Memorandum and New Articles of Association for Curtis Nicholson Limited and a Board meetings minute book for Mile End Distillery Company Limited.

Records of B E Bird and Company Limited, off-licences chain, comprising Directors' meetings minute books and register of members, including register of directors and share transfers.

Records of Thomas Mcandie and Company Limited, exporters of whisky, comprising minute book for directors' meetings, annual general meetings and extraordinary general meetings, register of members and shares, and annual returns. Also records of Duncan MacLeod and Company Limited, comprising annual returns.

Records of Meux's Brewery Company, 1888-1985. This collection contains corporate, accounts and premises records. Corporate records include minutes of Directors' meeting and Annual General Meetings, memoranda and articles of association, legal papers relating to a court case against the Marquis of Aylesbury and trading agreements. Accounts records comprise a finance file. Premises records include documents relating to brewery premises, individual public houses and also brewery vessels used at the Wharf.

Records of Burge and Company Limited, brewers, comprising Directors' meetings minute books, 1928-1930.

Records of the Aged Poor Society. The records cover an incomplete collection of minute books and annual reports for the Society and Saint Joseph's Alms House, Hammersmith. According to the Society's 'Historic Records' report (1957), no records prior to 1820 have survived.

Despite the gaps in the records, the minutes and reports provide detailed information on the establishment of the almshouses, the use of funds from will bequests, the admission and discharge of aged poor beneficiaries, and the membership and patronage of the Society.

Records of the John Roan School, Greenwich, and predecessors. This collection contains Roan Estate deeds for property in Greenwich (1473-1955); Governors' minutes, Head Teachers' reports and Clerk and Surveyor correspondence files (1682-1995); Roan Schools administrative records (1866-2002), pupils admissions and discharge registers (1705-1994), various printed material including school magazines (1834-1999), a large collection of photographs depicting pupils and teaching staff (1895-1990), and commemorative trowel, school badges and items of clothing (1876-1979); and school log books (1884-1976) for various schools operating in Charlton.

Records of particular interest are the Roan Estate deeds (LMA/4442/01/01) which are an excellent resource for the research of family and local history of Greenwich from the 15th to the 20th centuries and the admission and discharge registers (LMA/4442/03/02) provide a fairly comprehensive set of details of pupils who attended the Roan Schools. The calendars and prize giving programmes (LMA/4442/03/03) are also useful for researching pupils at the school and the school magazines, prospectuses (LMA/4442/03/03) and head teachers' reports (LMA/4442/02/01) provide detailed information on school activities, events and other developments.

The school represents a good example of the use of increases in charitable gifts and funds in Greenwich from the 17th century and details can be found in the surviving records of the first school, the Grey Coat School, in the Orders of the Feoffees (1682-1716) (LMA/4442/02/01/01/001) and the Register of admissions and discharges (1705-1736) (LMA/4442/03/02/01/001) which includes churchwardens' charity payments to Greenwich poor widows.

The impact of the Second World War on the Roan Schools is documented by a number of records in the collection including the Governors' Clerk and Surveyor's correspondence files which give detailed descriptions of bomb damage in Greenwich.

Information on the school's planning for the evacuation can be found in the Governors' Clerk's files (LMA/4442/02/02) and some lists of pupils evacuated and accounts of the evacuation to Kent and South Wales for four years can be found in reports in the Roan Schools records (LMA/4442/03/01 and LMA/4442/03/03) and Governors' minutes and Head Teachers' reports (LMA/4442/02/01).

Records of the North East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board, 1948-1949. This collection comprises the circulars to the North West Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board Hospital Management Committees.

Records of the Grand Order of Israel and Shield of David Friendly Society. The records relate to the administration of the Society, property investments and the social aspects of the Society, for example, there are files relating to the Annual Dinner and Ball, quizzes and newsletters.

Records of the Oriental Club charting the development of the club from its foundation in 1824 through to the present day; most areas of the club's history are well documented.

A particularly full set of minute books are held 1824-1978 for Annual General Meetings, the meetings of Trustees, the Committee of Management, the House Committee and various sub-committees. These volumes record both the major developments in club policy as well as the more routine occurrences and issues which affected the club. Together they give a rounded picture of club life.

Membership records are held 1825-2002 as are staff records 1858-1968. Some closure periods apply to both of these series and you are advised to consult the list in full.

For a wideranging series of records outlining the many different facets of club life, the secretary's papers are useful. Although the collection does not contain a complete set of secretary's correspondence, material held includes administrative files on a wide range of issues, letters dealing with complaints, files arranging club events, notices to members and staff, letters regarding honorary membership, and portrait subscription papers

Records relating to financial matters and club property are also held. Material includes deeds, plans and photographs, as well as a number of chairman's files relating to the financial policies used to save the club in the 1950s, to the purchase of Stratford House and to the leasing of the Hanover Square site.

A number of ephemeral items are also held. These include scrapbooks recording the history of the club, photographs, historical documents and printed material. Most noteworthy are a series of nineteenth century photographs of India and Japan and an important contemporary account of the battle with the Rohillas in 1790s, complete with a coloured drawing depicting the deployment of forces on the battlefield.

Accounts records of Whitbread and Company Limited, brewers, including Company accounts books (1815-1959) together with the annual copies of accounts and balance sheets issued to the director from 1890 through to 1952, statement of expenditure books from Britannia Street (1913-1922), cash books (1770-1959), deposit and depreciation ledgers (1916-1949 and 1938-1951 respectively), loan diaries and applications (1885-1919), securities ledgers and shares registers along with an unbroken series of rest books from 1799 through to 1918 with an additional series of rest books from 1941 to 1956.

Also included are accounts, cash and rent books from some of public houses owned by Whitbread and Company plus a variety of ledgers and journals regarding corporate finances both general and private.

Production records for Whitbread and Company Limited, brewers, including papers covering all aspects of the production process such as brewing books for ale (1834-1969) and porter (1804-1976), brewing manuals from the 1960s, Head Brewer's reports, butt books (1925-1937) and fermentation books (1802- 1839). Also included are purchase ledgers and stock books for raw materials (1746-1971), sample and sediment reports (1913-1920) and papers relating to transportation and maintenance of the plants including a horse book (1881-1950) along with documentation on general production statistics.

Furthermore a complete series of notebooks belonging to F.G.S Baker are available running unbroken from 1899 to 1925.

Premises records for Whitbread and Company Limited, brewers, including various title deeds and documentation for property owned by Whitbread and Company, ledgers detailing property, rents, repairs and valuations, papers relating to the North Brewery Project and plans of Company premises organised by region.

Records of Whitbread Properties Limited, a subsidiary of Whitbread and Company Limited, brewers, including corporate registers, accounts and estate ledgers.

Records of Whitbread International Limited, a subsidiary company of Whibread and Company Limited, brewers. Records include ledgers detailing Whitbread exports and ship stocks from the 1920s through to the 1970s along with advertising from the launch of various Whitbread products abroad most notably that of Mackeson Stout and Whitbread Premium Draught Beer.

Records of Forest Hill Brewery Company Limited, including corporate minutes and registers, share certificates, accounts, trade books and property ledgers.

Records of the Improved Public House Company Limited, a subsidiary of Whitbread and Company Limited, brewers. The records cover mainly corporate and financial papers including minutes, registers, private ledgers, accounts, and property agreements.

Records of R White and Sons Limited, soft drinks manufacturers, including a ledger covering profits and sales figures for R White & Sons from 1845 through to 1951 along with obituaries, details on property and wages, and a corporate and financial history of the Company. Also included are examples of bottle labelling and newspaper cuttings of Company adverts.

Records of the Manor Park Brewing Depot, consisting of letter books of outgoing correspondence from the Manor Park site.

Records of Goodhews Limited, brewers, consisting mainly of minutes from the meetings of the directors of Goodhews Limited and later the subsidiary companies of Goodhews (Holdings), Goodhews (Caterers), Goodhews (Inns), Goodhews (Castle Richmond) and the Cromwell Hotel (Stevenage) Limited. There are also papers relating to the formation of the Goodhews Company and the sale of R.V. Goodhews' shares in the 1930s.

Records relate to the operation and acquisition of Top Star Taverns Limited including articles of association, minutes, accounts, and correspondence from the 1970s.

'Epic violet', a draft memoir covering his service with the Air Ministry and the BEF, 1939-1940, notably pre-war air intelligence, the 'phoney war' and air reconnaissance in France, Sep 1939-Apr 1940, the German invasion of France, May 1940, and the evacuation of UK troops from Dunkirk, May-June 1940, written in [1957]. 'Skies to Dunkirk', a memoir based on the above draft,published in 1982.

Papers relating to his service in Somaliland, 1940, notably including typescript copies of telegrams to Lt Gen Arthur Francis Smith, Deputy Chief of General Staff, [GHQ Middle East], giving a brief account of the attack by Italian troops on British forces at Tug Argan, 11 Aug 1940, dated 12 Aug 1940, and to [Gen Sir Archibald Percival Wavell] giving an appreciation of the current situation in Somaliland, 14 Aug 1940.
