Records of the Sherborn family of East Bedfont. The main part of the collection consists of family, estate and parish documents. Most refer to land and events in East Bedfont and the surrounding parishes. There are some fine estate plans (most notably the 1694 plan of Pates Manor, ref ACC/3259/SE2/001) and complementary records concerning enclosure and tithe apportionment. Family correspondence includes the letter book of William Sherborn 1846-1870 (ref ACC/3259/SF3/001) and letters signed by Sir Edward Sherburne, royalist and poet 1684-1687 (ref ACC/3259/SF3/003-005). In addition, there are many references to incidents in local history which will bear interesting comparison with records already deposited in the archive. The artificial collections consist partly of title deeds and partly of correspondence, which includes communication news concerning industrial developments in the West Riding of Yorkshire, 1806-1822 (ref ACC/3259/AX/042-046).

Papers relating to the London estate of the Marquess of Camden. The records consist almost exclusively of deeds and leases for property on the estate.

This collection comprises records of the William Cotton Estate (later the Bow Common Estate) and documents the acquisition and running of the Cotton estate from [1714]- 1936.. The records include marriage settlements, trustee appointments, wills and probates, legal case papers, administrative papers for the Limehouse estate, papers relating to property transactions, registers of properties, plans and maps, catalogue of wines for auction and register of leases. Some of the material concerns the Bow Common Estate Company Ltd.

Records of the Evelyn family estates in Deptford, including leases and agreements to lease for premises (including public houses the Admiral Rodney, The Ship and the White Hart) in New King Street, Grove Street, Mill Lane, Slaughterhouse Lane, and Czar Street; building agreements for Alexandra Street, Amersham Grove, Amersham Vale Road, Greenfield Place, Junction Road, Milton Court Road, Napier Street, Vansittart Street, Wardour Lane, Woodpecker Road, Evelyn Street and the Prince Street police station.

Records of the de Burgh family relating to their estates in Hillingdon, Harmondsworth and West Drayton, including leases, releases, mortgages, letters, agreements and tax certificates. Also court rolls (courts baron) for the Manor of Colham and the Manor of West Drayton.

Records of the Connop family of Enfield, chiefly title deeds to property that members of the family acquired. This was situated for the most part in Enfield and its neighbouring parishes in Hertfordshire and Essex, Hatfield, Waltham, Cheshunt and Chingford, and was consolidated by the first Newell Connop and his sons.

Much of the material is in original bundles, each consisting of the deeds for one property; many of these bundles conclude with a conveyance to Newell, and those that do not, pass by inheritance or marriage into the family. For that property which is not conveyed either to the Connops or any of their relations, one can only assume that later deeds have not been kept with the earlier ones.

In another way also, the collection is incomplete; in his History and Antiquities of Enfield Robinson states that at the time he was writing (1823) Newell Connop held the Manors of Durrants and Suffolks. There is nothing in the collection at all relating to Suffolks, and although there is a schedule of the deeds for Durrants, drawn up in 1832 (ACC/0801/1126), there are no actual deeds. Nor are there any for Grapes Farm, stated by Robinson to be the main manor farm.

Deeds do exist however for the small manor of Elsings or Norris' farm, which Newell bought in 1804 (ACC/0801/0283-0305). There is also a survey of all Newell Connop's land in Enfield taken in 1804, which unfortunately does not now include a map, and a book of maps each beautifully drawn and coloured of his Essex estates 1803-1814 (ACC/0801/1045-1046). One of the most interesting items among the Enfield deeds is a sales particular for the Forty Hall and Manor of Worcester estate of Eliab Breton in 1787 which includes as Lot 22 the old royal palace of Elizabeth, noting that it stands in a good position for building and the palace when demolished would provide much building material. (ACC/0801/0043).

The collection also includes property transactions, sale particulars and related papers, family papers and wills.

Papers of the Tatem family relating to the Weir Hall estate, Edmonton. The documents relate mainly to the partial sale of the estate in the 19th Century and gradual urban development in the early 20th century.

Records of the Bateman family relating to their property in Ealing, Elbow Lane (later Little College Street) in the City of London, Tottenham; and out of London in Chesham, Buckinghamshire; and Kimberworth, Yorkshire (this latter including coal mines).

Papers of the Berkeley family including plans of family estates in St George Hanover Square, Cranford, Harlington, and Hillingdon; and pedigree of the Earls of Berkeley and the Barony of Fitzhardinge.

This exceptionally interesting collection consists of the archives of a London business family, the Howards, and their relations by marriage, the Eliots. The family were based in London, with homes in the City and various places round about, but they also had property and connections in several other parts of England.

The chief interest of the collection is in its quality as the personal record of a group of prosperous manufacturing and merchant families who were members of the Society of Friends. The Eliots were merchants and their account books, which cover both business and private expenses, together with letters and memoranda, reflect a picture of "City" life in the Eighteenth century. They attended the Change, Lloyd's and Child's and Jonathan's and other Coffee Houses, and dealt with a variety of business including trade overseas in cotton and duck cloth and Cornish tin and invested in "a voyage to Lima" and other merchant shipping ventures (including that of the Tuscany, unfortunately "Taken by the French and carried into Marseilles" in 1757). (See especially numbers 905, 928, 929, 944, etc.).

There is interesting material relating to John Eliot's estates supplemented by John Eliot's letters (e.g. Numbers 988-1011), which also mention a "good season" for pilchards, the decline of the docks at Topsham, the appropriation by the Government of some sugar pans near Exeter to use for French prisoners, etc. John's sister Mariabella also purchased in 1765 Pickhurst Farm, Hayes, Kent (Nos. 376-475).

There are amongst this collection a few letters and papers of later Howards, including an interesting pocket diary in which Samuel Lloyd Howard, grandson of Luke, jotted (unfortunately rather roughly in pencil) memoranda and sketches of impressions of his visit to America in 1854 (No. 1618). At sea his ship rescued the crew of the Hannay of Whitehaven, loaded with salt and flying a distress signal-"lay to and took all off, boy, baggage, chronometer, barometers and all".

At all periods the family kept in close touch with their relations in all parts of the country, including the Hows of Aspley, Bedfordshire, the Paces of Westmorland and London, the Leathams of Yorkshire as well as with fellow Quakers. This gives the collection a national rather than a local interest-indeed the family were not primarily associated with any one locality.

A curious document amongst the collection is a receipt dated 1824 for 8. 15s from R. Smith for freeing Hamma Fie, slave to Bentoo Demba, and signed with the mark of Madeba, Alcaide of "Birkow" (No. 1617/p.12). The Society of Friends Committee for African Instruction supported some missions, and Richard Smith, a friend of Luke Howard, was in Africa in the 1820's.

Quaker marriage certificates, of which there are several examples (eg. Nos. 117, 565, 1273, 1274, etc) give full details of both parties and are signed by members of the Meeting as witnesses. Birth certificates (e.g., Nos. 1275-1286, 1390-1393) give the date of birth and name, and were signed by witnesses to the baby's birth. The Society of Friends was in advance of both the State and established Church in respect of such documentation.

Records of the Wetherall family relating to their Castlebar and Castle Hill estates in Ealing, including leases, conveyances, abstracts of title, agreements, plans of the estate, and papers relating to a Chancery case regarding part of the estate.

Deeds and other papers, 1721-1923, relating to the estates of the Andrews and Weall families; including title deeds and other documents relating to the Andrews' estate in Pershore, Worcestershire (comprising various premises), 1744-1910, including references to various other individuals (Ref: ACC/1058/1-77); and records relating to the administration of the trust funds and estate of Margaret Andrews (Ref: ACC/1058/78-302), comprising title deeds and other documents relating to the Pinner estate (comprising various premises), 1721-1881, including references to various other individuals (Ref: ACC/1058/78-176), and records relating to the administration of trust funds, 1855-1923, comprising accounts of the trustees, correspondence and conveyances of the estate to property developers (Ref: ACC/1058/177-302).

The trustees' correspondence throws light on the state of farming and agriculture in Middlesex during the 1880s. The papers also include records relating to Margaret Andrews' litigation against her trustees.

Also papers of Dr James Andrews, 1852-1919, including insurance policies and conveyance of premises at Hampstead (Ref: ACC/1058/303-318).

Records of the Newdigate [later Newdegate] family relating to their manors of Harefield, Moorhall and Brackenbury, including court rolls, rentals and rent rolls, lists of tenants, surveys, financial accounts, surveys, maps and plans, and legal case papers (cases in Chancery and Common Pleas). Also papers regarding a visit to Harefield by Queen Elizabeth I in 1602; election diary of Sir Roger Newdigate, MP for Middlesex 1741-47; papers relating to the lecturer's house at Uxbridge; papers relating to the Uxbridge Yeomanry, captained by Charles Newdigate; and papers relating to Harefield Church. Also some papers relating to family property in Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Hampton, Ickenham and Hillingdon.

These records relate mostly to the estates of the Mitchison family and their relations in Middlesex, London, Northumberland, Surrey and elsewhere, which were managed by William Anthony Mitchison, the elder, on behalf of his father John Mitchison, the elder, his brother John Mitchison, the younger, and himself in the mid and late nineteenth century. The remainder of the accession is composed of private papers of members of the Mitchison family. These are generally draft marriage settlements, drafts wills, and draft executors' papers. There are also some papers relating to trusts and shares. The private papers of John Mitchison the younger include, besides papers relating to the inquiry into his state of mind, transcripts of accounts of his estate from 1856-99, and records relating to his establishment in Brighton.

This accession was originally composed of forty bundles, bearing solicitors' numbering on the wrapper, where these remained. Most also bore labels giving a rough summary of the contents-not always correct-the sectors' number and a title assigning it to a member of the Mitchison, Maw or Sturges family (ref: ACC/1156/154). These have been used as sectional headings in the catalogue, and where the label does not survive, or is defective, the bundle has been assigned to the member of the family who from the contents, seems likely to have been the original assignee. In a few cases, new titles have had to be substituted, as in 178, 191-3. Inside each bundle was one or more bundles which form the basic unit of this list. A corresponding list of the original larger bundles with the new numbering of the inner bundles is appended. Bundles 807, 813 and 868 appear to be incomplete. The contents of the bundles are largely draft deeds, mostly leases and affidavits, and correspondence. As solicitors' drafts, the information given in the draft affidavits is on occasions contradictory or misleading. There are a few original deeds, inducing a small number of conveyances. In several bundles, stamps are missing from correspondence.

This collection consists of deeds and other property records of the Heming and Vaughan families of Hillingdon. The documents include marriage settlement, title deeds, tax assessment, papers relating to enclosure and copies of Acts of Parliaments. Properties mentioned include plantations in Jamaica and premises in Uxbridge, Hillingdon and Hendon.

Records of the Dyot family relating to their estate in the parish of St Giles in the Fields, Holborn, including deed, lease, abstract of title, and plans.

Papers of Sir John Moore, merchant and Lord Mayor of London, including papers relating to Moore's civic and personal affairs; papers relating to Moore's mercantile buisness; estate papers; correspondence and letters to members of the Moore family; papers relating to property; notebooks and journals; and other family papers.

Records of Farebrother, Ellis and Company, chartered surveyors. Records relate mostly to the fee farm rent business. The rentals are generally very detailed, giving the names of the landlords of the fee farm rents and of successive tenants (ie owners) and occupiers of each property, together with a description of the property, its reference number and the amount of rent payable.

Archive, 1754 to date, of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA; formerly the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, or Society of Arts), created by the Society in the course of its activities, and comprising records of its administration (Ref: AD), and records of its activities and events (Ref: PR), also including some printed material dating back to 1634.

Papers relating to Barnsbury Manor, Islington, including records of the courts baron and courts leet; deeds to the copyhold estate of the manor; surrenders; warrants; deeds of conveyance of land and premises at Holloway; deeds for Tufnell family holdings in Holloway, Manor of Canonbury, and in the Manor of Newington Barrow at Highbury; and deeds for the Tufnell family estates in Ireland.

Surveys of Lord Craven's estates in Paddington including Craven Street, Carnaby Market, Craven Buildings, and Craven Hill, with schedules of leases granted and plans.

Legal papers for the Battersea Park Commissioners, including the purchase of land for the park and leasing of land within the park. The Prince Albert Tavern, Battersea Park, was also owned by the Battersea Park Commissioners and the leases to the landlords are included. There is also a lease of land to Prices Patent Candle Company.

2 letters written to Frederic Seebohm. (1) From Richard Oliver Heslop, iron and steel merchant of Akenside Hill and Newcastle upon Tyne, 8 Feb 1886. Promising to send a tracing of a map of Corbridge, Northumberland; suggests sources bearing on the history of land tenure in Northumberland. (2) From [James] Saunders, of Clapham and Westminster, 20 Oct 1892. Covering letter sent with tracings of some common field systems, discussing land tenure.

Both letters are autograph, with signatures.
