Records of the Metropolitan District Nursing Association, formerly the Metropolitan Nursing Association for Providing Nurses for the Sick Poor. The records comprise: minutes and annual reports, 1873-1974 (Ms 14618-24); correspondence and reports, 1876-1974 (Ms 14625-7); agreements 1917-38 (Ms 14628-31, 14811-12); financial records, 1924-74 (Ms 14632-6, 14891-3); and staff records, 1875-1974 (Ms 14637-51). Records of the National Heart Hospital, consisting of a sample of the case files kept by the physicians of the hospital between 1907 and 1963 and photographs taken by Dr John Mathias Senior Registrar of the first heart transplant in the United Kingdom in 1968.

Also held are rules, circulars and subject files of the General Secretary (later the Chief Administrative Officer in 1980s and Chief Executive in the 1990s) on a wide range of subjects including membership, scope of treatment, staff, premises including Inverforth House and the Pergola and Ivy House, regional organisation, funds and royal visits. Also held are a presentation volume to Lord and Lady Hague with original artwork depicting the premises and a book of remembrance presented to the hospital after the Second World War (H53/B/11/001-002). Financial series (H53/C) include annual returns and cash books.

Records on patients treated at Manor House Hospital (H53/D) are incomplete. They comprise admission and discharge and operation registers (1933-1978), lists of members by firm (1931-1993) and bed statistics. The volumes do not provide detailed information on patients and their treatment.

Records of the Society's regional areas and districts (H53/E) consist mainly of extensive series of minutes held by regional and district secretaries across England, Scotland and Wales. The Northern Area records include subject files and financial records.

Printed material (H53/F) includes comprehensive series of press cuttings with indexes, publications, brochures, articles, histories and newsletters. There are souvenir brochures for openings of premises, royal visits and related events, and some artefacts including badges.

Also held are papers of A V Alexander, President of the Society (H53/H) including photographs, artwork, correspondence and history.

Records of the Florence Nightingale Hospital for Gentlewomen, 1892-1953, including annual reports, administrative files including correspondence and requisitions, accounts, papers regarding legacies and bequests and legal papers relating to property transactions. There are no surviving medical or patient records for this hospital.

A thick file of unpaginated duplicated material entitled 'Child Health and Environment: Bethnal Green', 1960s, apparently course material distributed in connection with a course in, presumably, child health, at St Bartholomew's Hospital (University House). The material is undated but from references within the text and given in the bibliography would appear to have been compiled in the late 1960s. The approach taken in the course would seem to emphasise the environmental aspect of child health and to take a social medicine perspective. Notes circulated in connection with a course on the above given at St Bartholomew's Hospital during the late 1960s.

Hugh Jolly collection including biographical material, followed by papers relating to his work at Charing Cross Hospital, 1960-1983; on secondment in Nigeria, 1961-1962; and as a 'media doctor' and popular author.

Louisa Martindale collection, 1872-1964. The collection consists of Section A: a little personal correspondence, papers, articles, speeches and lectures by Louisa Martindale, and some personal material including notes on the glaucoma which eventually blinded her, 1872-1960; and Section B: papers concerning the Medical Women's International Association (founded 1919) of which Miss Martindale was President from 1937 to 1947. As well as her own correspondence in this capacity, 1937-1946, there is one file of the correspondence of Mme Montreuil-Strauss, Secretary of the Medical Women's International Association at his period. (Louisa Martindale destroyed the vast bulk of her case records at the time of her retirement from practice around 1950, those remaining were destroyed by her executors after her death).

'Reminiscences of the Hospital at the Corner', St George's, Hyde Park, by Pamela Mary Clewett as a probationer nurse, 1939-1945. This is an autobiographical account of what it was like training as a nurse at St George's and elsewhere during the war years.
