The papers are extensive but by no means comprehensive. There is no personal or biographical material and very little record of Thompson's research. On the other hand his contributions to international science and football are extensively documented. There is a very full record of Thompson's Foreign Secretaryship of the Royal Society and his organisation of the European chemical conferences (EUCHEM) and substantial documentation of his work for ICSU and IUPAC, including the Commission on Molecular Spectroscopy and the Triple Commission on Spectroscopy. Thompson's contributions to international relations were not limited to science (or football) and he kept detailed records of his Chairmanship from 1972 of the Great Britain - China Committee (later Great Britain - China Centre). The football papers are substantial, particularly for the last decade of Thompson's life, and thus there is full documentation of his Chairmanship of the Football Association and of the many problems facing football at that time, including hooliganism amongst its supporters.

This collection mainly consists of personalia including educational certificates, school reports, examination papers, and notebooks of William Joseph George Hands' mathematical studies at Cambridge. It includes a small amount of ephemera relating to the Board of Education Exhibition which took place in connection with the Imperial Education Conference, 1923 and to the activities of the International Educational Society. Also included are a paper by Hands on 'A simplified curriculum based on occupations', 1925, and papers on experiments with English composition at St Mary's Boys' School, Weymouth and with the topical treatment of history and geography at S. Aldhelm's Girls' School, Branksome, c.1910.

Also included are published histories of the Company from both the nineteenth and twentieth century. The records demonstrate how the Centre was run, and how relations deteriorated between the Centre and its parent, the Inner London Education Authority. The papers of the campaigns which were run from the Centre are particularly valuable for research on local issues in Hackney, as well as wider activism in the Black community. The photographs, slides and negatives are also a strong element in the collection, documenting the Centre's activities and related campaigns such as Colin Roach demonstrations and support given to the Knight family.
