MS. 3352: Copy dated c1805 of a journal of a voyage from London to Cochin-China, 11 September 1792-15 June 1793. Note on verso of leaf 2 signed 'J.B.' (Sir John Barrow (1764-1848), Secretary to the Admiralty, and founder of the Royal Geographical Society) states 'This journal was written by Lord Macartney on board the Lion merely for his own amusement and to pass away a few heavy hours on a very long sea voyage'. MS. 5746: Correspondence and papers relating to medical services in Madras, 1782-1787, comprising 2 letters to Macartney from John Ruding, surgeon, Chingleput, 1782, 1783; letter to Macartney from James Hodges, Masulipatam, 1783; letter to Macartney from George Bell (d.1789), surgeon, Tanjore, 1783; Committee Minute on a proposal by Macartney for a fixed establishment of surgeons, 1784; letter to Macartney from Terence Gahagan, surgeon, enclosing a copy of his plan for the reform of the medical department, Vellore, 1787 (the plan is addressed to Macartney's successor as Governor of Fort St George, Madras, Sir Archibald Campbell).

The collection comprises correspondence, writings and administrative material relating to the Jenner family, particularly Dr. Edward Jenner (pioneer of smallpox vaccination) and the associated Black and Davies families, 1680-1877.

The material on Edward Jenner includes papers relating to organisations set up in the aftermath of his vaccination discoveries: the National Vaccine Establishment, the Royal Jennerian Society and the London Vaccine Institution.

Reports of Thomas Lauder Brunton's lectures on therapeutics and notes from a lecture on chloroform with three fragments of lectures on eye affections, on the effects of alcohol, and the effect of drugs on the brain given at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, 1892-[1895].

The majority of the collection is made up of journals kept by Buckle during the years 1866-1870, during which he travelled to South America, South Africa and Australia (there are also periods during which he was stationed at Portsmouth). There are some lacunae in the sequence of diaries. There is also one autograph album kept by Buckle relating partly to his own affairs (his application to become House Surgeon at the West Norfolk and Lynn Hospital, 1863-1864) but also including older material predating his birth.

Collection of note-books containing six volumes on Botany and Comparative Ostology, a Register of Photographs, and a Bicycling Diary. The 5 Botanical notebooks and the single volume on Comparative Ostology are illustrated with mounted and other drawings, some in pencil.

Alchemical writings by Hollandus and others, early-mid 18th century; item 1: Traité d'ouvrages minéraux, ou de la Pierre des Philosophes. There are some small pen-drawings of alchemical apparatus in some inner margins. Inserted as a frontispiece, is a symbolic [?] sepia drawing of a man rescuing a child from drowning in a lake. This work was first published-in German-in 1600 at Middelburg: no record of a French translation has been traced.

On the first fly-leaf 'Anne Cath. Phelps' [c. 1820?], and on the first leaf 'F. Hearne. Jan'y 7. 1865'; item 2: Testament de Jean Isaac ou opération minérale: traduite du flammand en latin par Jaques de Zomere. Two volumes of notes, in Latin comprising 'Collegium formulare habitum ab illustri Domino Georgio Wolfgangio Wedelio. A.O.R. MDCXCIV coeptum Die 19 Novembris'. The last four leaves contain an account of a 'Zermabschwechtende hitzigen Fieber', which broke out in 1696. At the end of the main text 'Finit die 27 April 1695'. On the t.p. is an inscription 'Sorte obtinuit Johannes Philippus Huth, Doctor Fridburgensis in Wetterau. 1712. 14 Novembris'. MS. No. 4984, a copy of Wedel's 'Collegium casuale', 1695-98, has a similar inscription on the t.p. in which it is stated that the MS. was inherited by J. P. Huth from his uncle Philippus Huth, Doctor at Gemersheim 1712, who was probably the compiler of both these MSS. At the end of this MS. is inserted a printed leaflet containing an account of a disturbance in the city of Thorn between Polish and German students on 16 July 1724. (This leaflet is entered in the Catalogue of Printed Books, s.v. 'THORN'.) and 'Collegium casuale' (in two books). 'Collegium therapeuticum'. The two folding leaves have been inserted, and contain a 'Tabula de methodo consultandi epistolari et renunciatoria'. On the recto of the first of these is written 'Collegium casuale a chymista Wedelio habita' and below this 'Sorte obtinuit hoc manuscriptum ex hereditate beati Domini Patruelis Philippi Huth, Medicinae Doctoris et Physici Germersheimensis 1712. 14 Septembris. Johannes Philippus Huth'. The second inscription is by a different hand from that of the text. A similar inscription is found in MS. No. 4983, Wedel's 'Collegium formulare', 1695-96. At the end of the second book of the 'Collegium casuale' is written 'Finit. Anno [16]98 die 23 Januarii', and at the beginning of the 'Collegium therapeuticum' 'Mense Maii 1695 inceptum'.

Central Midwives Board register of cases kept by N E Hains, 1935-1941, in Gloucester (Feb-Aug 1935), Hereford (Jan-Mar 1936), Farnham Common (Apr 1936-Mar 1938) and Horsham (May 1938-Oct 1941). The register is a standard pre-printed volume produced by the Central Midwives Board showing patients' names and addresses, date of expected confinement, numbers of previous labours and miscarriages, date and hour of birth, and details of doctor assisting, patients' conditions, drugs or other aid given. Under 'date and time of midwives arrival', the information for cases 1-45 is of admittal or transfer to labour ward, but thereafter times and dates are given alone, which may imply that these were home confinements.

This collection contains the papers of Constance Maynard from 1866-1935. It comprises diaries of a varying nature relating to all aspects of the life of Constance Maynard including her Greenbook diaries 1866-1935 - of her emotions, thoughts, extracts from letters, sermons and texts; her Diaries 1871-1913 - detailing weekly activities and events of both a personal and work nature; her Sundial Diaries 1911-1935 - recording the search for both cottages, the Sundial, Little Bookham and the Sundial, Gerrard's Cross, and subsequently details of life in retirement such as accounts of her visitors, visits made, community work and works read and written; her Travel Diaries, 1868-1926 - of her college vacations, holidays, tours and visits, detailing companions and places visited with some photographs, maps and drawings; Diaries regarding Effie [Stephanë Anthon] 1887-1915 - detailing the life, character and relationship with Effie [Stephanë Anthon] from the arrangement of her adoption until her death; the Autobiography written 1915-1933 - covering 1849-1927, divided into seven parts and further into chapters by Constance Maynard, covering all aspects of her life, and including her edited version of a history of the Henry Maynard family, c.1920s, originally written by her Cousin Mary [HM King] 1910, covering 1839-1910; Writings by Constance Maynard 1870-1931 - including indexed anthologies of her own poems, and of poems by other authors, anecdotes told to her, notes on subjects such as Euminides and the Parables, Extracts from Texts, and a Bible with extensive notes added by Constance Maynard; Writings by Family and Friends 1871-1905 - including diaries and notebooks of Catherine Firth, Dora Maynard and Mabel Prideaux; and Personal Memorabilia, 1868-1913 - including her Girton College Degree Certificate, a life painting of Limpsfield, a book presented to her by Westfield College on her retirement and a life painting of The Sundial, Little Bookham.

Letters written by James Smetham, 1853-1877, mainly to William Davies, concerning his work, schemes to raise money and his religious beliefs. Smetham called his letters "ventilators" and they often took the form of handmade notebooks with their contents resembling diaries or commonplace books. Other correspondents include Rev Thomas Akroyd, Quintin Hogg (1845-1903), Charles Mansford, Charles Gabriel Dante Rossetti (1828-1882), John Ruskin (1819-1900) and Frederic James Shields (1833-1911). Also letters to Sarah Smetham, his widow, from William Davies, 1889-1895.

Transcriptions of three scribbling diaries kept by footman Arthur Newbury with biographical essay of Newbury, modern photographs of addresses mentioned in the diaries, maps, index and note on sources, all compiled by David Jackson, who may have obtained the diary at a car boot sale in Cheshire (115pp), February 1997.

Four Exchequer receipts dated 1568, 1580, 1616 and 1622 were found enclosed with a letter to Watson's wife.

The Brain archive comprises his personal and professional papers together with sampled case notes from his private practice, 1865-1977. As well as medical papers, there is a significant amount of material relating to Brain's philosophical and literary interests, and some papers of Brain's family and of his wife Stella (nee Langdon-Down).

Two journals of Sir James Clark, 1847-68, including notes on Clark's travel with the Royal family to Scotland and Ireland.

Cockayne's professional and personal papers, 1907-46, consist of his casebook, 1913-34, with patient-lists, notes and loose correspondence regarding patients; and his papers, 1907-46, including his medical registration certificates, 1907-9; notes on patients, with accompanying charts, on medical subjects, such as pyloric stenosis, 1934-38, and on entomological specimens; correspondence about his patients at Great Ormond Street, 1935, about his retirement and requests to serve on Committees, 1922-46; and articles and notes on various subjects, such as the medical history of the First World War, 1915-32.

Halford's papers, c.1767-1843, include notebooks containing medical extracts and observations, which include prescriptions, in the format of commonplace books, including prescription by Halford's father, James Vaughan, 1767, 1767-1801; Clinical reports, 1783-86, and lecture notes made whilst a student in Edinburgh, 1785-89; Case notes with prescriptions, from practicing in Leicester, 1787-91; Fee books, 1791-1808, annual cash-books with fees and receipts, 1796-1839 (incomplete, missing 1814, 1831), and cheque-book stubs, 1805-09; Prescription books, including one kept whilst practicing in Scarborough, 1792, 1802-03; Halford's copies of Jacobii Hollerii Stempani in Aphorismos Hippocratis commentarii septem... (printed, 1675) with annotations in his hand, and the Middlesex Hospital Pharmacopoeia, c.1790s; Monthly note-books containing daily appointments and total fees per month, 1802-43; Papers and speeches given at the College, including lectures on medical subjects, the Harveian Oration, 1800, and oration made at the opening of the new building, 1825, 1800-35. There is also a copy of Moore's Almanack for 1812, a postcard of hotel in Copenhagen, 18th century, and journal belonging to Jean Gaspard Lavater, 1787, found with Halford's papers.

Sir Henry Head's papers, 1891-1909, consist of his casebooks of patients with Herpes Zoster, with sketches and photographs, chiefly from Head's work at the London Hospital, 1891-1909, and his casebooks of patients with various diseases, with sketches and charts, from his work at the City of London Hospital for Diseases of the Heart and Lungs, Victoria Park, 1894.

Stock's papers, 1899-1902, consist of his notes and sketches about army medical services, case notes with sketches, and negatives of photographs, taken in South Africa during the Boer War, 1899-1902; photographs, negatives, and lantern slides made from the photographs, some labelled and indexed, taken by Stock during the Boer War, 1899-1902.
