Brixton School of Building London County Council School of BuildingManuscripts from the collection of the British Medical Association, formerly held in the BMA Library, Tavistock Square, London. The manuscripts were numbered and catalogued at the BMA, with two exceptions among these papers - however the numbering of surviving documents is not consecutive, so that the original collection must have contained at least 26 catalogued items and an unknown number of unrecorded acquisitions. Former BMA MSS.1-6 (transferred at the same time as the manuscripts described here) are now GC/140; one fugitive BMA manuscript was purchased separately and is now MS. 6881. The location of the remainder is not known. The contents mainly comprise transcripts of medical lectures and case notes.

However, the majority of the papers are those of George and Judith Baines relating to their work at Eynsham County Primary School, 1960s-1980s. These include administrative papers, teachers' guides, teachers' record books, school magazines, building plans and press cuttings. Also included is a copy of the episode of the BBC television series, 'The Expanding Classroom' which featured the work of George and Judith Baines at Eynsham School. The film was made in the summer term of 1969 before the first new school building burnt down. The collection contains many examples of children's work, mainly from Eynsham County Primary School, but also from Brize Norton, including project books, creative writing, audio tapes of music, art work, including block printing, and work with fabric. The project books each include some mathematics, scientific obeservation or experiment, creative writing and art work and were bound in block-printed covers designed and executed by the children. Also included are texts of lectures and lecture notes; papers relating to courses and workshops; correspondence re visits, including overseas connections (Iceland, Canada and the USA), 1960s-1980s; papers relating to George and Judith Baines work with students at Bishop Grossteste College, Lincolnshire, 1980s. Archbishop Tenison's Secondary School for BoysRecords of Archbishop Tenison's Grammar School (formerly known as Archbishop Tenison's Secondary School for Boys). Most important are the Trustees' and Governors' meetings minutes 1847-1953 (ref: Acc/2692/17-19). An unusual survival has been a number of evacuation records, which do not exist for many schools in London (ref: Acc/2692/142-148). Illustrations of the school and its life are present in a volume of plans of the school site at Kennington Oval dated 1927 (by A.H.R. Tenison, Architect, ref: Acc/2692/154), and in the large collection of photographs (ref: Acc/2692/155-205). Concerning the sale of the library in 1861 is a Catalogue from Sotheby's which records the prices fetched at auction for individual books (ref: Acc/2692/209). A history of the school, not entirely accurate, was written in 1928 and a transcript survives (ref: Acc/2692/240).
