Papers of William Maiden, 1812-1824, comprising a cutting from the National Register containing a letter to the editor from T Paxton, on 'Mr Tipple's Extraordinary Case', 26 Jul 1812; a copy of the second edition (1813) of the original publication by Maiden titled An Account of a Case of Recovery after an Extraordinary Accident, by which the shaft of a chaise had been forced through the thorax. The label on the front was written by Sir Richard Owen. Monckton's work is countersigned by James Luke (Member of the Court of Examiners 1851-1868) and Frederick Carpenter Skey (Member of Council 1848-1867, and Professor of Anatomy and Surgery from 1852).

Late 14th century manuscript volume: Benediktinerregel (Rule of St Benedict), divided into 73 chapters (numbered in error as 72), each chapter consisting of a passage in Latin followed by the German translation. There are some ink sketches of monks (ff 6r, 37v, 38r, 82v) and one sketch of an abbot standing before a table (f 71r). The front cover bears a strip of parchment with the inscription: 'Regula Benedictj / Jn Theutunice'. The volume also contains a list of monastic orders with descriptions of the characteristic dress of each order (ff 94r-94v); the text of regulations, in Latin, containing many quotations from the Latin Rule (f 95r-97ra); and the later inscription 'Jste liber p[er]tinet ad mo[na]ste[r]iu[m] ot[e]nbure[n] (this book belongs to the monastery of Ottobeuren) (f 104r).

Collection of miscellaneous medical material, 1744-1931, including 14 notebooks, comprising anatomical notes taken from a course of Dr John Hunter's lectures in 1774; a commentary, 1857, on Dr Alexander Munro's Osteology; notes by J Talfourd Jones on lectures on medical subjects, 1860-1863; notes on experiments in physiology by E H Starling, 1892; miscellaneous other notes, 1744-c1910 and undated. There are also printed reports of Manchester Public Infirmary and Lunatic Hospital, 1779-1780, 1786-1787, and of Manchester Lying-In Hospital, Salford, 1807-1812 (14 items, including some duplicates); miscellaneous photographs and negatives, 1889-1931 and undated, including some of tourist spots.

The collection consists of Lewin family correspondence, including some copy letters from George Grote; travel diaries of George and Harriet Grote on France, Belgium and Switzerland; and Harriet Grote's journals.

'Elements of statics', a volume written for publication at the proposal of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, though it was never actually published. De Morgan used it as evidence of his work and knowledge when applying for the Mathematics Chair at University College London in 1827.

The collection contains handwritten notebooks and loose typescript papers. Some of the notebooks are entitled 'Electricitat' or 'J.H.Waitz' and are often in German. Some are concerned with the history of electricity. The folders contain loose papers, often correspondence, about student work and exams and societies, in the history of science.

The letters are mostly between Gosset (known as 'Student') and Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher (1890-1962) who became Professor of Eugenics at University College London. Letters from other scientists are interleaved where they bear on the correspondence.
