An ecclesiastical and astronomical calendar, together with the tables and figures of the zodiac: folding calendar on a sheet of parchment. Originally two rows, each of twenty four folds, but the first folds in the lower row ( lower if the sheet is looked at from the side containing art. 1) are missing and the first fold in the upper row has been sewn to the foot of the second fold. Three membranes were joined to make a sheet.

In both rows on one side, the calendar is in blue, red, green and black, four folds to a month. The second half of January is missing. Entries in red include Edwardii Regis and Translacio Edwardi Regis (20 March, 13 October); in black, Translacio Mildride (13 July). Each feast is illustrated by a conventional head, sideways, in coloured penwork: kings crowned, abbots tonsured etc. The ruling is in red and green inks.

On the other side, the other way up: (a) in the upper row, the sign of the zodiac in each month, followed by its occupation; (b) in the lower row, an astronomical calendar, 1 january to 15 June on 22 folds, four to a month.

(a) The January sign and occupation are missing. The December occupation came on the fold which was exposed when the sheet was closed and has been rubbed away.

(b) The first two folds were left blank.

Drawings of the customs and manners of Tonkin [Hanoi], Vietnam, to accompany the written description of Samuel Baron (fl.1670s-1690s) of Fort St George, Madras. Engraved versions of these illustrations were later published as part of 'A collection of voyages and travels, some now first printed from original manuscripts', ed. Awsham and John Churchill (London, 1732). Manuscript amendments and inscriptions indicate some pre-publication correction, probably by the printer.

Copies of outgoing letters from the President, Officers and Assistant Secretaries. Each page may contain up to four copied documents. Volumes are numbered 1-73 with an additional volume for the period January 1901-November 1904.

A series of (generally) printed material relating to, and commenting on, the Society's activities. The press cuttings and scrap books contain cuttings from newspapers interspersed with other printed matter, and occasionally items of manuscripts. The remaining volumes are concerned with particular events or subjects, such as 'HMS Challenger 1872-1895' or 'National Antarctic Expedition 1899-1904'. There are three types of volumes; the first volume is for the years 1846-1876, but therafter two types of book were kept;

a) biographical - 12 volumes, 1872-1910

b) general, 10 volumes 1885-1910.

These were discontinued for a short period, then merged: 36 volumes, 1918-1976. Thereafter newscuttings were photocopied and kept in monthly bundles.

The Register Books exist in Original and Copy form. The Register Book contains copies of scientific papers submitted to the Society - the original documents may be found in the Classified Papers series. The papers were transcribed to establish their precedence for a particular discovery or idea. It follows that not all communications to the Society were registered in this manner, but only those judged to contain some significant material.

Robinson's volatile temperament and his impatience with administration and routine have seriously affected the survival of material. Thus little survives of his correspondence which he usually wrote in longhand and without copies, or of his public life, service on committees, advisory boards, learned societies, and in the launching of new journals. There are, however, many manuscript notes in varying lengths of sequence and a few notebooks relating to research topics. Examples are a sequence of ideas on the possible structure of strychnine, tentatively dated 1945-1947 by J.W. Cornforth, and from a later period two relatively extensive sequences of research and correspondence, on the origins of petroleum and on drug research. Lacunae in the collection are to some extent compensated for by the autobiographical material. There are the background material and corrected proofs for the first volume of his memoirs published in 1976, and substantial typescript drafts of the second volume which was unfinished at his death together with narratives, correspondence and photographs sent to him by colleagues. There are also tape-recordings of conversations with colleagues covering similar types of recollections.

The correspondence and papers of Thomas Gold, astrophysicist, 1920-2004. The papers that comprise this collection provide a fascinating insight into Thomas Gold's research, views and life as an academic. They relate to almost very aspect of his career from his work at the Admiralty Signal Establishment, research into the theory of hearing and controversy over his proposal that the surface of the moon would be covered with a layer of fine-grained rock powder, to his advocacy of the contentious theory that oil and gas deposits are non-biological (abiogenic) in origin and his proposal, proved correct, that microbial life exists deep beneath the earth's surface.

Minutes and correspondence of the Secretary of the British Comparative and International Education Society, 1982-1996.

The collection includes Schiller's notebooks, his working notes, scripts of his lectures, articles and essays, correspondence concerning engagements and with colleagues and students, material relating to his involvement with courses for teachers, personalia, printed material and photographs. Schiller's notebooks mainly contain working notes and the text for his lectures which provide evidence of his educational ideas, for instance, on the teaching of numbers, the importance of freedom and creativity through art, craft and movement activities, on reading, writing and conversation.
Also included are the notes and papers of Schiller's wife, Mrs Lyndall Schiller, including diaries of their daughters' childhood development. These records of Lyndall were deposited along with those of her husband and as much of them relate to matters that were of interest to both of them they have been retained within the collection of her husband's papers.
In addition the collection contains papers of two of Schiller's students who attended the 'Course on the Education of Children in the Junior School' organised by Christian Schiller at the University of London Institute of Education, 1959s. These include some wooden mathematical teaching apparatus.

Small group of papers reflecting the career of Ethel Martha Hatchard (née Smith), a woman teacher who combined teaching with family commitments, c1906-1950s. The papers comprise personalia relating to her education and career, including school reports, correspondence relating to courses attended, letters of appointment, documents relating to pension arrangements, examination papers, and a manuscript career outline. Also included are a notebook from North London Collegiate School for Girls, containing notes from needlework lessons, 1907, and examples of teaching materials for reading and arithmetic, c1950s.

Also includes 'Heads of lectures for students of the second year' and 'Notes of lessons on how a lesson should be prepared' and sample lessons including:'Notes of a lesson on the whale'; 'The uses of the participle'; 'The root of man'; 'Division of fractions'. Also enclosed are separate notes on 'Registration, organization and methods as effected by the Revised Code'. It is unclear whether these notes were compiled by a lecturer or a student.

The Dave O'Reilly Experiential Learning Archive is a collection of materials relating to the history and development of experiential learning in the international community. Its contents include papers given by Ed Rosen, [1970]-1996, including material relating to the International Conferences on Experiential Learning (ICEL), 1987-1996, including texts of papers, abstracts, programmes and publicity material; papers relating to the organisation of the first ICEL, held in London in 1987, which Rosen was involved in organising, inlcuding minutes of the Steering Group and correspondence with participants; collected books, pamphlets and other printed material related to experiential learning.
