A collection of exhibition guides, leaflets, and posters, for exhibitions by Kingston Polytechnic Arts and archaeology students dating from 1970s and 1980s.

The Stephen Sondheim Society Archive documents the life and work of musical theatre composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim. The core of the collection was collected by antiquarian bookseller and Sondheim enthusiast Peter Wood- his collection later passed to the Society. Additional material has been added since, filling in gaps in the Peter Wood collection and documenting productions and publications that have occurred since it was transferred to the Society.

Both parts of the Collection contain a range of material on Stephen Sondheim and his work- notably programmes, leaflets, posters and press cuttings. There are also journals, books, audio visual material and collectables. The Collection dates from Sondheim's earliest work to the present and will continue to be added to as his works continue to be performed. There are also documents relating to the work of the Society itself, notably the Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year awards (SSSSPOTY).

Letters from Iris Murdoch to Mary McIntosh, who was a student of Murdoch's at St Anne's College, Oxford. McIntosh went on to be a renowned sociologist. These letters are from the period 1955-1958, when McIntosh was a student and represent her student/ teacher relationship with Iris Murdoch.

Records created or held by Dennis Berry while he was the Head of the Architecture department at Kingston School of Art/ Kingston College of Art/ Kingston Polytechnic (now Kingston University). Includes photographs, scrap books, notes on town plan exhibitions and projects, notes on curriculum and examinations, meeting minutes, diaries, leaflets and publications from the Architecture department, and posters for an Architecture talk 1959.

Papers of Iris Murdoch, 1962, comprising a letter to Pam Stringer thanking her for remembering to send her the words of a song 'it fills an important blank in my novel...it is supposed to bring tears to the eyes when sung' and expressing pleasure at having seen Stringer recently in Cheltenham.

Letters from Iris Murdoch to her friend, civil servant Leo Pliatzky dating from 1943 to 1978. Some of the letters are from the Second World War when Pliatzky was serving in the army and Murdoch was based at the Treasury, and then later at the UNRRA. Many of the later letters are confirming arrangements to meet up. With some accompanying documents including a photograph and press cuttings.

Records relating to the Geology Club of Kingston College of Technology, later Kingston Polytechnic. The club was established in 1951 and held regular meetings. Collection includes minute books of meetings, registers of attendance, newsletters, photographs and other items.

Papers of Peter Conradi, comprise research material on Iris Murdoch, books including works by Murdoch and foreign language copies of Peter Conradi's biography and books by and about Elias Canetti. Papers notably include correspondence to Conradi notably from Michael [Bayley] (believed to be John Bayley's brother), [2003-2005]; Dr Marjorie Boulton concerning matters including Conradi's biography, c 2001-2006 and from Harper Collins Publishers discussing the sales of Iris Murdoch: Saint and Artist, 2003-2004. Papers also contain research notes including a draft forward to Conradi's Iris Murdoch: Saint and Artist with notations, c 1985; notebooks used by Conradi to record information about Murdoch for his biography and newspaper cuttings regarding Murdoch, including obituaries, 1995-2004.

Records relating to the School of Music at Kingston University dating 1998-2010. Includes posters, programmes and leaflets for Kingston University Music Concerts; school of music staff and student handbooks from early 2000s; programmes for graduation ceremonies; and other general documents relating to the history of Kingston University.

Items belonging to Iris Murdoch presented by Audi Bayley. These items were from Iris Murdoch's former home in Charlbury Road and include letters written by Iris Murdoch to Borys and Audi Villers [later Audi Bayley], a planning notebook for Jackson's Dilemma, and a range of objects. Includes:

Tony Arnell is a casting director, who worked for well known television companies including LWT. Prior to this he worked at Spotlight, alongside talent spotter Cary Ellison, to encourage actors and actresses to sign up to be included in the publication. Throughout his career, Mr Arnell visited theatre productions to spot actors to either encourage to join Spotlight, or that he might want to cast in the shows he was working on. The Tony Arnell Theatre Programme Collection consists of programmes for theatrical productions seen by Tony Arnell from 1960s- 1980s, with his notes inside detailing his thoughts on the cast, production and play. The programmes are predominantly for shows in the South-East of England, and also include annotated programmes for performances by Drama School and as part of the London Fringe Festival. The collection also includes some from programmes from the 1990s and 2000s, although these are not annotated.

Also included in the collection are items related to the '12' group- founded in 1958 by Cary Ellison as a gathering of casting directors, theatrical agents and other leading figures in the theatre industry. Tony Arnell took over as president in 1988 and continued to run the group until its closure in 2004. Items in the collection include a history of the group, and albums of photographs of 12 members taken at their annual garden parties from 1988 onwards.

Documents relating to Kingston School of Art (later Kingston College of Art, which merged with Kingston Technical College to form Kingston Polytechnic in 1970). The Collection includes minute books; scrap books containing press cuttings, exhibition invitations and leaflets; prospectuses; and items relating to exhibitions and fashion shows.

Archival material relating to Iris Murdoch's play 'Joanna, Joanna'. Includes:

1) Typed script for the play by Fraser and Dunlop [script at this time entitled 'Joanna, Joanna, Joanna']

2) Advanced reading copy of the published version on the play dated 30 Aug 1994, produced by Colophon Press.

3) Proof of published version of the play dated 24 Jul 1994, with handwritten note on the front by unknown individual. NB the play at this point was called 'Joanna'.

Papers of Iris Murdoch, 1953-c 1960, comprise a copy of Sartre, Iris Murdoch (Bowes and Bowes, Cambridge, 1953) and a letter to Rene Micha thanking him for his generous discussion of Murdoch's novels in his article in Critique, 'Les romans a machines' d'Iris Murdoch', 16.155 (April 1960) pp 291-301.

Covers a number of themes from the University's history including students and staff, buildings and campuses, sporting and social events, and special events.

Assorted documents relating to the Department of Architecture at Kingston College of Art/ Kingston Polytechnic collected by Dennis Berry, who was head of the department from 1966-1987. Includes meeting minutes, staff lists, prospectuses, academic plans, course accreditation submissions, town study reports and programmes from degree ceremonies.

Papers and books belonging to the theatre critic Sheridan Morley (1941-2007). Includes correspondence, records relating to his various productions, volumes of press coverings covering his reviews, research notes and transcripts of some of his publications, photographs, records relating to his father Robert Morley and Grandmother Gladys Cooper, records relating to Noel Coward, theatre memorabilia and ephemera and objects.

Papers of Iris Murdoch, c 1980-1995, comprising correspondence addressed to Roly Cochrane from Murdoch including 138 letters and 59 cards and postcards, which demonstrate Murdoch's interest in someone with whom she became fond through correspondence alone. Within the letters Murdoch discusses her work, confiding in Cochrane, who continued to write to her during the onset of Alzheimer's disease. The collection contains a final note from John Bayley referring to her illness. The collection also contains a copy of Facing Reality, 1997, a work by Roly Cochrane.

Letters from Iris Murdoch to Hal Lidderdale dating from 1945 to 1990s. Lidderdale was a friend of Murdoch's from Oxford where they were students together, and they remained in touch until Lidderdale's death. Topics covered in the letters include Murdoch's work following the Second World War with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), meeting with Jean Paul Sartre, her brief engagement to David Hicks, and her later work and travels.
