Cole , Monica Mary , 1922-1994 , geographerLetter from Matthew Collins of 40 Upper Pitt Street, Liverpool to Augustus De Morgan, 8 Apr 1853. Covering note, enclosing a pamphlet, On Clairaut's theorem ... (1853).
Autograph, with signature. A note in De Morgan's hand states that the content of the pamphlet, published in the Cambridge and Dublin Mathematical Journal, new series vol IX (1854), were plagiarized from a lecture given by Mr James MacCullagh in 1846.
Collins , Matthew , fl 1853 , mathematician and correspondent of Augustus De MorganPapers of John William Couchman and Harold Seymour Couchman, surveyors, agents to the lords of the manors of Tottenham and Edmonton and civil engineers, 1789-1938. The majority of the papers are those of John William Couchman who was a civil engineer (in particular, apparently, a waterworks expert) and a surveyor and valuer, but a few later ones relate to his successor, Harold Seymour Couchman.
John William Couchman acted as surveyor and agent to the lords of the manors of Tottenham and Edmonton. Most of the manorial documents are valuations for enfranchisement of copyhold property. These cover the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and are arranged alphabetically under the names of the copyholders. There is also, however, a survey of Tottenham manor of circa 1830 and two rentals of quit and waste rents for Tottenham and one for Edmonton, together with correspondence with the local urban district councils over their purchase of manorial waste.
The remainder of the collection consists of documents concerning property of the Sperling family and of others for whom Couchman acted as agent; his own papers relating to various engineering projects - notably that to provide a drinking water supply for Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, papers concerning the Tithe rent charges for Tottenham (for which he acted as valuer), various sales particulars including one of 1789 for Bruce Castle and Mount Pleasant, and two albums of photographs taken at the end of the last century which are of considerable interest.
Couchman , John William , fl 1840-1900 , surveyor and civil engineerThe papers consist primarily of Daly's meticulous records of experiments, covering the period 1919-1965, in a series of large notebooks, all indexed by him, some of which represent compilations of material gathered over many years from a variety of sources. There is also correspondence with, and biographical information regarding, several eminent physiologists including Sir Edward Sharpey-Schafer and Sir Charles Sherrington. William Sharpey is represented by five autograph letters to Sir Charles Lyell, 1858-1871.
Daly , Ivan de Burgh , 1893-1974 , physiologistCorrespondence between Augustus De Morgan and George Boole, Professor of Mathematics at Queen's College Cork, dated 1842-1864. The collection also includes letters from John Stuart Mill, and letters from various correspondents mostly dated 1846-1848.

Morgan , Augustus , De , 1806-1871 , mathematicianAugustus De Morgan's mathematical tracts, copied by John Power Hicks from the original manuscripts in the Library of University College London.
Hicks , John Power , fl 1849-1851'Elements of statics', a volume written for publication at the proposal of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, though it was never actually published. De Morgan used it as evidence of his work and knowledge when applying for the Mathematics Chair at University College London in 1827.
Morgan , Augustus , De , 1806-1871 , mathematicianThe vast majority of the material relates to Dent's research and clinical interests and falls into four main categories: correspondence files; files created around the publication of papers; lecture notes and symposium papers; and case/research notes. There are also smaller quantities dealing with other aspects of his career, such as the administration of UCH Metabolic Ward. The papers thus reflect most of Dent's scientific and clinical interests. This research is mainly represented by the abstracted documentation which he kept with drafts of his published papers (see section E.1) and also by correspondence about cases and clinical case notes (see section C.5). To a lesser degree they also illustrate the work at the laboratory bench which underpinned much of this research. For example, a file of unidentified paper chromatograms has been preserved (C.2/10) to illustrate one of Dent's methods of working, as described by his colleague, Heathcote, and quoted in the Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society, 1978: 'Paper chromatograms were not to be thrown away. They were filed and, since the colours faded, the outline of each spot was drawn in and the intensity of the colour was indicated by a number.' The way in which Dent compiled a large series of files around drafts of scientific papers also illustrates the importance of the published paper to him as a stage in the research process. An incomplete collection of reprints of Dent's published papers may be found in section E.2 of the collection.

Turner , George Grey , 1877-1951 , surgeon x Grey Turner , GeorgePapers of Sir George Duncan Gibb, comprising:
Manuscript volume entitled 'Geological Rambles around Montreal and its Vicinity. With an account of the history, physical geography and geology of the island. Illustrated with a coloured geological map and numerous wood engravings, by Sir George Duncan Gibb, Bart, MA, MD, LLD, FGS, London 1868'. According to the letter of transmissal (pasted into the front of the volume) and the preface, Gibb's intention was for the work to be published but it was never financially viable to do so. The volume is set out as if it were a published work, with chapters and 'woodcut' illustrations (mostly of fossils) which are in fact original ink drawings by Gibb. The descriptions contained in the volume were compiled between 1851-1853 (although at least one of the illustrations is dated 1855), before the Victoria Bridge and the Grand Trunk Railway were constructed, and prior to the area being covered by the Geological Survey of Canada.
