Coal industry collection. Pamphlets, parliamentary papers, press cuttings and extracts concerning the coal industry in UK, France, USA and Germany, collected by Tawney. Tawney's despatch box and a quantity of miscellaneous papers omitted from the original list were identified and added in 1994. They include a photograph of the members of the Coal Industry Commission and some statistical data.

The Dalton papers consist of diaries, correspondence, speeches, personal papers, photographs and printed material, covering subjects such as Foreign Office papers, economic reform, political and Labour Party issues, defence policy and production, Dalton's honours and offices, the Special Operations Executive, the Ministry of Economic Warfare, and the Board of Trade. The papers comprise personal correspondence between G Elton Mayo and his wife, Dorothea and his daughters, Patricia and Gael, 1913-1947. Dorothea Mayo expected her husband to write to her daily whenever he was away and the result is a series of diary style letters sent during their periods of separation. The fullest series are for 1922-1923 when Mayo visited the USA prior to settling in Philadelphia and for the period from 1929 to 1937 when Dorothea remained in England with their daughters.
The second series of correspondence comprises letters to his daughters while they continued their education at Bedales in England and during World War Two. The correspondence is mainly with his eldest daughter, Patricia, though there is some correspondence with Gael and also Patricia's first husband, Walter Goetz.
Both series of letters contain detail on Mayo's work and life at Harvard, including meetings with colleagues, lectures and research projects. In addition there is discussion of books, ideas and people which influenced his work and thinking. The World War Two letters include comments on the war from the USA and detail events leading to Gael's escape from behind German lines in France with her son and first husband.

The collection of primarily bound volumes comprises the business documents of Robert Newman and Co., and related companies, 1774-1955. The documents themselves include letter books, journals, ledgers, account books, memorandums and ship registers, and relate chiefly to trading in Newfoundland, Canada. Many of these internal working documents were originally intended to serve as permanent records. They can provide the researcher with a general overview of the financial and statistical history of the firm, giving a record of transactions as they occurred. In addition, they offer a degree of descriptive information, showing the development of codes and ciphers used by the firm, an insight into labour relations, and a detailing of the raw materials used for trade.

Papers on Nana Asma'u include copies of her manuscript poems (1820-1865) and later papers relating to her work, including translations, 1976-1984. Papers on works by Shehu dan Fodio include copies of his poems on male-female relationships (1789 and undated) and later papers relating to his work, 1975-1981. Papers on works by Asma'u's female relatives and descendants include copies of poems and writings by various authors (c1860-1934 and undated) and later papers relating to the subject, c1950-1990. Other material comprises field notes on the remnants of Asma'u's disciples, the Yan Taru, 1973-1990; papers on the milieu in which Asma'u lived in Gobir, c1900-1984, including Gobir chiefs; papers, including press cuttings, on the situation of women in northern Nigeria in the 1980s, the subjects including Muslims, prostitution, women's organizations, medical matters, and women's education.

Papers, 1903-1992, including articles, reports and press cuttings, on Sokoto relate to geological history, prehistory, palaeontology, archaeology, pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial history, the subjects including the social and economic history of the city of Sokoto, colonial administration, British fears over Mahdism, and local government and economic issues in Sokoto state in modern Nigeria.

Three volumes contain over 500 postcards, many in colour, relating to Nigeria, including images of people, cultural events, various places, and other aspects of Nigerian life [late 20th century].

Notes by John Dixon on medical matters and on things of personal interest to him such as astrology and photography spanning his entire career, 1848-1903. MS.5191 comprises more formal material, namely certificates and indentures.

Rees' papers on George Orwell, 1949-1963, relating to his role as literary executor include correspondence and papers, some relating to Orwell's death, adopted son Richard, and proposed posthumous publications, and including material relating to his wife Sonia; papers on the George Orwell Archive Trust; typescript transcripts of poems Orwell contributed to the Adelphi, 1933-1936; two book reviews by Orwell, 1943-1944.

Rees' papers on Simone Weil largely comprise translations, typescripts and proofs for Rees' publications on Weil. There are also some writings by Weil; a photograph of her, 1942; letters to Rees from Weil's mother and brother, André, and other correspondence on Weil, 1958-1970; press cuttings on Rees' publications on Weil.

Rees' papers on R H Tawney, relating to his role as literary executor, include correspondence and papers of Tawney; Rees' correspondence on Tawney, largely dating from 1960-1970; correspondence and papers relating to the sale of Tawney's belongings and his will, with other personal documents relating to Tawney and his wife; correspondence relating to the disposal of Tawney's collection of books on economic history, 1952. The correspondents include a number of prominent literary and other public figures.

The later deposit comprises a typescript on Orwell and a typescript and corrected proofs on Murry.

Manuscript volume containing treatises on French finance, 1714-[1783], namely instructions on the general compatibility according to the custom established by the Chambre des Comptes, [1770], including treatises on the accounts of the estates and woods, expenditure and the poll-tax; a paper on foreign exchanges, 1714, with a table of exchange rates for England and Holland; a historical account of the banking reform program of John Law, 1720, including an account of rulings related to finance for 1720 and the preceding years; a treatise on the program of John Law, [1720], presenting arguments for and against Law's operations; studies on the finances of England and France, [1783], attributed to Dr [Richard] Pryce; a paper on the actual state of the finances of Great Britain, 1755. The general title page and table of contents are in a handwriting of later date than the treatises themselves.

Manuscript volume containing a transcript of Joseph Massie's alphabetical index of the names of authors of commercial books and pamphlets written from 1557 to 1764 (British Library Lansdowne MS 1049). This copy was made in 1891 by Mr G W Gatfield of the British Museum.

Manuscript volume containing a draft by Gavin Young, 1832, of his pamphlet Observations on the law of population: being an attempt to trace its effects from the conflicting theories of Malthus and Sadler (London, 1832). It contains cancelled material which does not appear in the printed edition, and on the front cover is attributed to a 'Colonel Twenny'. The British Library catalogue gives the author as Young.

Manuscript volume containing a treatise by Marc Antonio Cartagna, 14 May 1651, giving political and economic advice to the Venetian Republic which could result in a large annual income, entitled 'Consiglio politico economico proposito...alla serenissima Reipublica di Venetia per stabilire un'entrata annua perpetua di grossissima somma di ducati, con notabilissimo benefico publico e privato'.

Royal warrant granting a pension of £200 a year to John Ramsay McCulloch "in consideration of his services as the author of many useful publications connected with the finance and commerce of the country", issued in June 1886.
The warrant is issued under the signature of Queen Victoria and with the subscriptions of Sir Robert Peel, Ralph Neville and William Cripps. The document also includes a leaf of description and comments by Professor Herbert Somerton Foxwell.

A volume, 1955, containing extracts taken mostly from the business papers of Garteret Priaulx & Co. to illustrate the history of Guernsey from 1790 to 1815.

Three items concerning currency, once in the possession of Professor Herbert Somerton Foxwell, as follows.

1. Papers on Japanese currency, namely two tables of, and remarks on, the values of Japanese metal and paper currency, endorsed by Professor Foxwell 'Soyeda on Japanese Currency October 1884', covering the years 1868-1884; a table ('The Annexed Table'), giving values in yen of imports and exports, 1872-1881; letter from Juichi Soyeda, 139 Queen's Road, Bayswater, W.London, written on 5 December 1884, to Foxwell at Saint John's College, Cambridge. The letter is signed 'Yours truly, obedient student. G.Soyeda'. The envelope bears the note in Foxwell's hand 'Japanese Paper Currency. G. Soyeda'. (20 leaves. 7¾" x 5" and 7¾" x 6¼").
2. Copy of a 'Mémoire sur la préférence que l'on doit donner à la Monnoye d'argent sur la Monnoye d'or', Paris, Aug. 1720, and 'Réponse au Mémoire, etc.', undated. This is a typescript copy (carbon) made by Professor Charles Franklin Dunbar in October 1890. Includes numerous notes in Foxwell's hand, including the following: 'This manuscript was part of a volume of tracts etc. relating to Law & the Mississipi Scheme, unfortunately bought by [Dr] Bonar, & sent to Harvard during a week of vacation when I was away from Cambridge. I tried in vain to buy or exchange it back, but Profr. Dunbar kindly got this copy made of one item in the volume'. (17 sheets. 7¾" x 9").
3. Two letters, both written by F.B.Forbes, 57 Rue Pierre Charron, Paris, on 13 April 1893 to Foxwell at Saint John's College, Cambridge. The letters and envelope are in an envelope bearing in Foxwell's hand 'F.B.Forbes. April 1893. Effect of sales of Council Bills on Price of Silver'. (8 sheets, 10¼" x 7¾" and (the second letter) 2 leaves, 6½" x 4¼").

Manuscript volume containing a paper entitled 'Proposal of a new bank', possibly by James Armour, c1699-1700, probably concerning the Scottish banking. James T Bell assigned this manuscript to 'J.A.', though there is now nothing on the document to justify this - part of the title seems to have been lost during binding repairs. 'J.A.' is probably James Armour (fl 1699-1721), who made proposals about the Bank of Scotland in 1722. He also published A proposal to supply the defect of money and relief to the poor (1696). This manuscript seems to be another version of the same proposal.

The records of Section F principally concern the annual conferences of the British Association and the involvement of the Section in them, 1973-1998.

The bulk of the collection consists of files which mostly contain correspondence and minutes. They also include programmes for the conferences, publishing contracts, financial accounts, draft copies of articles and lectures.

In addition to these files, there is a selection of the publications which were produced by Section F, including some of the publications of the proceedings of Section F at the annual conferences of the British Association. Finally there are various exhibits which were part of the 'British Economists' exhibition by Leslie Smyth at the University of Keele.
