Small group of papers of Joseph Payne (1808-1876) and of his family including his sons (Joseph) Frank Payne (1840-1910) and John Burnell Payne (1839-1869) and his father-in-law the Rev John Dyer. Personal and working papers of Professor Brian Abel-Smith, Professor of Social Administration, [1970-1989], mainly comprising correspondence files relating to teaching at the London School of Economics, including examination records, departmental records, papers relating to taught and research degrees, reading lists, and other administrative material; files containing Abel-Smith's notes, correspondence and papers on various research interests; and correspondence files concerning dealings with outside organisations, including the Labour Party and various Government bodies. Papers relating to the Sainsbury Committee on the Pharmaceutical Industry, the Hunter Committee on Medical Administration, and the Fisher Committee on the Abuse of Public Service, [1965-1973], of all of which Abel-Smith was a member, mainly comprising background, evidence and committee papers.

This collection covers four aspects of the life of Sir Hugh Beaver: biographical and personal material; professional correspondence; personal correspondence; and lectures, speeches and addresses.
A) Biographical and personal: This section contains letters from friends and family sent to Sir Hugh, drafts and extracts for his autobiography, Sir Hugh's pocket diaries and desk diaries and notes press cuttings and correspondence relating to Sir Hugh's time in the Punjab Police.
B) Professional: This section contains correspondence relating to Sir Hugh's time in Canada, correspondence between Sir Hugh and Sir Alexander Gibb, correspondence relating to Sir Hugh's job at the Ministry of Works and building projects undertaken by the Ministry, correspondence relating to business affairs at Guinness, correspondence relating to his work on various committees during his time at Guinness.
C) Correspondence: This section contains personal correspondence relating to Sir Hugh and his family. It is arranged in chronological order.
D) Lectures, Speeches and Addresses: This section contains lectures, speeches and addresses on industrial planning, education, management practices, air pollution, industry and economics.

Records of Archbishop Tenison's Grammar School (formerly known as Archbishop Tenison's Secondary School for Boys). Most important are the Trustees' and Governors' meetings minutes 1847-1953 (ref: Acc/2692/17-19). An unusual survival has been a number of evacuation records, which do not exist for many schools in London (ref: Acc/2692/142-148). Illustrations of the school and its life are present in a volume of plans of the school site at Kennington Oval dated 1927 (by A.H.R. Tenison, Architect, ref: Acc/2692/154), and in the large collection of photographs (ref: Acc/2692/155-205). Concerning the sale of the library in 1861 is a Catalogue from Sotheby's which records the prices fetched at auction for individual books (ref: Acc/2692/209). A history of the school, not entirely accurate, was written in 1928 and a transcript survives (ref: Acc/2692/240).

Records of the London Head Teachers Association, formerly the School Board for London Head Teachers Association, including Minute Books; Attendance Registers; Year Books/Diaries; Handbooks; Calendars; Publications; Reports; Programmes and Tickets and Personal Papers.

The records illustrate the varied activities of the LHTA and includes a good selection of Minute Books for Council and other committees. There is also a fine series of SBLHTA and LHTA Yearbooks and handbooks which include a full list of London Schools with names of head teachers.

Records of other activities are also included, for example, menus and programmes for social functions and guides to the Annual Exhibition at Westminster Central Hall. There is a small amount of material relating to Miss Louisa La Teller Swann, LHTA president 1928-9.

The archive consists of the organisation's archives and Maternity Alliance publications. It includes Annual Reports and Accounts, the papers for the Annual General Meetings, the Minutes of the Executive and Management Committees and the papers of the working parties and subcommittees that reported to them, a complete set of the MA monthly newsletter, MA publications (including reports, fact-sheets, training notes, booklets and books), Directors' working papers (Christine Gowdridge), press cuttings, posters, a MA clock, an award.

The records reflect the organisation's work in:

• Education (this includes educating employers and individuals of what was existing legal provision for maternity, but also education related to campaigning to reduce inequality in maternity provision, including lobbying government and trade unions for key changes in maternity provision);

• Research into and support for specific groups (ethnic minorities; travellers; teenagers; asylum seekers; disabled etc);

• Publications: Creating publications to support the above work;

• Training: Creating published training resources and providing training sessions for those who worked with target communities (i.e. those who worked with parents on rights and benefits such as the DSS; Social workers; Advice groups and charities);

Papers of Samuel Wilderspin, 1823-[1980], chiefly comprising letters received by Wilderspin, although there are a few in series 6 (Manuscripts) written by him. The rest of the collection comprises material collected by Wilderspin, including notices of his lectures, a few sample lessons and promotional literature on literary, scientific and educational societies, and Wilderspin's and Thomas Young's printed works laying out their theories of education. There are also two theses on Wilderspin. Series 7 (Local Infant Schools), is material collected by Wilderspin's biographers Dr Francis A. Young and Dr Phillip McCann, about schools founded by Wilderspin, in the course of writing their book on him.

Particular points of arrangement:

1. Although the material is arranged in classes there are many items that appear to be in the wrong class or which could belong to more than one. Cross-references, especially for the Gaskell letters and material relating to lectures, have been made but it would be advisable to read all the class descriptions when looking for items. References to individuals other than the Gaskells have not been cross-referenced as the class and list descriptions are a guide only to the nature of the papers.
   2. Generally the collection within classes is arranged chronologically. Where material in a class was packaged in date sequences which overlapped it was resorted chronologically on arrival at the archive. The exception is 6/Manuscripts which contains three sets of material each with different provenance.
   3. Endorsements - Many pieces are endorsed. Some are by Wilderspin, in ink. He tended to write the sender's name on the back of the letter. Others are in pencil and are by Dr. Francis Young who added possible dates, explanations and possible readings of illegible words. He also wrote some explanations in biro on separate sheets of paper. These have been left with the originals and are numbered in the same sequence.
   4. Some letters refer to "enclosed" items. The whereabouts of these are no longer known.
   5. For counting purposes note that the previous counting of pieces and items has been confused. The number of items quoted in the class descriptions and recorded on the envelopes containing the papers may not therefore reflect the exact size of the class. For a definition of items and pieces see Cook, M The Manual of Archival Description 2nd edition (1989).
   6. For some years there is copious material while for others there is very little.
   7. Where possible the main subjects in a class, in terms of quantity, have been identified in the class description. Some classes, however, were too diverse to do this.
   8. Many of the dates have been added to the documents in pencil by Dr. Francis Young, brother to John Young, who deposited the papers.

'I have received and read with much interest your letter of 10th November in which you furnish me with particulars of your Provisional Committee for creating a United Nations University Institute in London. I note that amongst those with whom you are in touch is Dr. Slavik, our Minister of Education, as well as Dr. Ripka and Dr. Císar;. These gentlemen will, I am sure, let you have their views on the project from the Czechoslovak point of view.We have also in England a Czechoslovak Association of University Teachers, who will certainly be most interested in the idea. For myself, as a former Professor of Sociology, I naturally welcome any effort to promote understanding between university teachers of different nationalities. At the present epoch especially such association is of outstanding importance'.
2. Letter to Greaves from John Gilbert Winant, United States Ambassador, 16 Nov 1942. 'Thank you for your letter of November 12th telling me about the suggestion for the establishment in London of an International University Institute. I was interested in this and would like to attend the meeting to be held at the British Academy on Monday November 23rd. Unfortunately I have a previous engagement at that time and am sorry I cannot be with you. I would appreciate, however, your keeping me informed concerning any plans which may be decided upon in this matter and I am gratified for your courtesy in writing [to] me'.
3. Letter to Greaves from (George) Gilbert (Aimé) Murray, 17 Nov 1942. 'I am afraid I cannot come to the meeting at the British Academy on November 23rd, and I am still not quite clear in my mind about the purpose of the International University Institute. Of course I can see that there is great danger that all over the world intellectual values will be thrust aside and the whole intellectual side of life undervalued and neglected. This is partly the deliberate influence of both Nazism and Communism. If the International Institute is to be concerned with the preservation of these intellectual values, I can see important work for it'.
4. Letter to greaves from Richard Austen Butler, Board of Education, 8 Nov 1942. 'Thank you for your letter of 12th November...I should like to keep in touch with progress with this scheme but I shall be unable to attend meetings personally. I am, however, asking my Public Relations Officer, Mr. D.H. Leadbetter, to attend the meeting next Monday...'.
5. Letter to Greaves from Joseph Bech, Luxembourg Minister for Foreign Affairs, 18 Nov 1942. 'I am entirely in agreement with this scheme which I consider would be of immense value in helping to solve the problems of reconstruction which will arise in the near future and I am grateful to you for having invited me to take part in the launching of such an Institute.
