Papers collated by Elizabeth Millicent Chilver, mainly relating to anthropological work in Cameroon, 1963-1989, notably papers by various authors on the anthropology of the Cameroon Grasslands, 1963 and 1989, covering subjects including matrilineal society, witchcraft, magic and divination, with notes on the authors by Chilver; working notes on the Kingdom of Bum in the north-west province of Cameroon, compiled by Chilver in 1993, including a volume of photographs; translations of German documents dated 1908-1913 relating to German policy in the Bamenda Division in the north-west province of Cameroon; photographs of Chilver and Audrey Isabel Richards in Uganda and Cameroon, with an explanatory postcard by Chilver; copy of a memoranda by Dr Mervyn David Waldegrave Jeffreys, Senior District Officer in charge of the Bamenda Division, and Mr F R Kay, District Officer, on land tenure in Nigeria and the South Cameroons, 1936; copies of press cuttings about womens' demonstrations in south-west Cameroon, 1994; and two letters to Chilver regarding conditions in Uganda, 1953-1957, from Lady Helen Cohen, wife of the Governor of Uganda, and Mrs Noni Crossfield.

Title; "Receuil (sic) d'Oeuvres d'Observations très Curieuses et Utiles dans L'Art de la Chymie." The manuscript belongs to the second half of the eighteenth century, is written throughout in French, and has probably been compiled from the popular books and pamphlets based on the writings of Albertus Magnus and similar authors, of which many were published during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. There are elements influenced by astrology and alchemy.

Papers of Vital Chaussegros on magic and occultism, 1814-[1845].

Fifteenth-century manuscript volume containing a calendar for the year 1439, followed by tables, giving the golden number, etc, and also including signs of the zodiac and instructions for blood-letting. This translation of the calendar made by Hanns Gemund (or Johann Gmund, or Jean de Gamundia) in 1439 probably dates from c1470. The back of the binding bears the inscription: MS. Gamundia Kolender, Wien 1439. On folio 1*v is an extract from a catalogue describing the manuscript (in French).

Manuscript volume, 1694: Rechenbuch. An arithmetic book containing problems, including calculations for finding the date of Judgement Day, the Golden Number, etc, together with astrological information. Some of the problems are set out in verse.

These papers comprise the manuscript collection of F[rederick] Bacon Frank (1827-1911). They include a medieval medical miscellany (MS.550), material by or relating to the 17th century Yorkshire physician Nathaniel Johnston (MSS.3083-3086 and 6080), and some Bacon family administrative documents (MS.6079). One item relating to Nathaniel Johnston that did not form part of the Bacon Frank collection has been catalogued with it for convenience (MS.3086).
