Records of the Union of Post Office Workers, comprising records of several local branches of the Union and an interesting variety of branch newsletters and journals. These reflect the wide range of activities which once came under the Post Office, such as the cable room branch and the telephonists branch; and also include mutual benefit societies and benevolent funds.

Records of the Union of Liberal and Progressive Synagogues (ULPS), dealing mainly with the creation of the new version of the prayer book Service of the Heart which was published in 1995. Rabbi John Rayner edited the new edition with Rabbi Chaim Stern as co-editor. Rabbi Julia Neuberger chaired the anthology committee. As well as aiming to combine general Jewish tradition with Progressive Jewish thought the editors wished to respond to changes in Jewish outlook in the late twentieth century. The use of language, in particular gender sensitivity, was carefully examined.

Other records include minutes and correspondence of the Federation of Womens' Societies Executive Committee and papers relating to ULPS educational courses.

Manuscript relating to the Union of England and Scotland, entitled 'Answers to ye 14 Queries', being a reply to [J Ballantyne's] 'Some queries proposed to consideration relative to the Union now intended'. The 'Queries...relative to the Union..." are in fact arguments against it; the writer of the "Answers" (apparently a Scot) points out the fallacies in these arguments and supports the proposed Union.

Papers of Edgar Ashworth Underwood, 1911-1980. The surviving Underwood papers represent a far from complete record of his career. His correspondence is incomplete and his early career in public health glimpsed by a few notes and papers. The bulk of the collection is made up of the drafts, manuscripts and typescripts of his writings, some of which were never published. Underwood was a perfectionist and polished his work many times. However his immense work for a second volume of A History of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London (to follow Wall and Cameron's history and cover the period 1815 onwards) was never published and sadly the drafts appear to lack one chapter (chapter 15) which has evidently strayed. Similarly a great deal of labour was spent on a history of urology in the late 1950s and early 1960s and on a life of Edward Jenner but neither of these works was ever published, Underwood's failing eyesight inhibiting his researches. However, the collection is valuable in that Underwood meticulously researched and checked evidence and normally kept full records of his work: thus anyone interested in the history of medical education or the apothecaries for example should note the numerous transcripts and copies of administrative records and documents held by the Public Record Office, Guildhall, Royal College of Physicians and elsewhere.

Papers of the Ullstein family, 1856-1998, comprising papers from a number of separate deposits from members of Frederick Ullstein's family. It contains both personal and family papers arranged by individual family members (1361/1-9) and material relating to the pre and post war Ullstein publishing business (1361/10-28). The latter contains correspondence regarding the take over of Ullstein by the Axel Springer Verlag (1361/17; 1361/22-23). In addition there is a quantity of material which Frederick Ullstein appears to have inherited from his former employer, Wolfgang Foges, managing director of Aldus Books (1361/29-85).

Uganda: Pressure Groups Material, 1977-1986, comprising testimonies, newspaper articles, manifestos, constitutions and statements issued by the Committee on Uganda, the National Resistance Movement (Uganda), the Save Uganda Movement, the Uganda Freedom Committee, the Uganda Freedom Fighters, the Uganda Group for Human Rights, the Uganda Liberation Group in Zambia and the Uganda National Movement.

Manor of Lordshold records include court books; indexes to court books; draft court books; minutes of courts and presentment books; register of officials; papers entered into court books; surrenders and admissions; deeds; rentals, surveys and other documents.

Manor of Kingshold records include court books; indexes to court books; draft court books; minutes of courts and presentment book; papers entered into court books; deeds.

Manor of Grumbolds records include index to court books; minutes of courts and other volumes; papers entered into court books; deeds.

Papers relating to the Tyssen Amherst Estates include marriage settlements; conveyances; building agreements; land tax records; rental; surveys and plans. The collection also includes a minute book of Henry Norris and letters patent regarding Downing College, Cambridge.

The covering dates of the court books are the dates of the actual courts, or proceedings before the steward, as distinct from enrolments of transactions out of court. The original numbers of the volumes are given in inverted commas in the description column and will be needed if use is made of the original indexes. Since the manors of Lordshold, Hackney and of Stepney were held in conjunction until 1652, a few records relating to Stepney are included in this collection, for example M79/LH/128/4. Similarly court books for Lordshold, 1654-1659, 1661-1664 and extracts of Court Baron rolls, 1652-1717, can be found in the list of Stepney manor records (Refs. M93/1-2, 4, 89-92) as well as some deeds (e.g. W93/439-441).

Many of these records were damaged by flooding due to enemy action in the second World War and cannot be consulted in their present state. However where the court books are unfit for consultation, draft court books and papers entered into the court books can be used as an alternative.

There are two notebooks of Louisa Tyndall and one of Anna Hirst which are of personal and religious substance; Lectures (JT/4) - the volumes of lecture notes consist of notes by John Tyndall for lectures given at the Royal Institution of Great Britain (RI) and the London Institution as well as various addresses and speeches for example at St. Andrew's Hall, Glasgow and Belfast. The notes refer to lectures on heat, radiant heat, light, magnetism and electricity, sound, the discoveries of [Michael] Faraday, John Tyndall's American tour as well as the apparatus for the lectures; Biographical Material (JT/5) - the biographical material contains notes made and materials collected for biographies of John Tyndall. These include articles, newspaper cuttings, hand written notes, drafts by C N Creasey and A S Eve, written attempts by Louisa Tyndall and other papers with biographical notes such as hand-written copies of Pasteur letters and chronologies. There are two boxes of Thomas Archer Hirst material which refers to his journals and contain biographical notes; Press Related Material (JT/6) - Press related material includes written articles and letters for the Times and Saturday Review, newspaper cuttings relating to John Tyndall and his works and activities for example of lighthouses, his American tour, as well as obituaries and miscellaneous pieces on religion and scientific affairs; Publications - Articles (JT/7) - the publications and articles consist of various off prints and copies of publications and articles by John Tyndall and others. Many were presented to John Tyndall, some relate to obituaries and have Louisa Tyndall's annotations in them; and Other (JT/8) - Various miscellaneous items consisting of bound volumes of manuscripts relating to issues such as John Tyndall's life, work, poetry written or collected by John Tyndall, valentines and travel notes, portraits, drawings and sketches of John Tyndall. There is also a box of medals of John Tyndall, a folder with an index to correspondence possibly in Louisa Tyndall's hand, a testimonial given to John Tyndall on his marriage to Louisa and various other papers.

Papers of Adml Sir Charles Tyler, comprising service documents and letters received, including those from Horatio Nelson, 1805, Lord Mulgrave (1755-1831), 1807 to 1808, and Admiral Collingwood, 1808 to 1809. There is also one letter from Lady Hamilton, 1808, and letters to Lady Tyler, 1800 to 1815.
