Archives of the Madeira wine merchants Cossart, Gordon and Company. They relate both to its domestic business in Madeira and to its international operations, including its relations with customers and agents in the British Isles, continental Europe, the United States, the West Indies and (from c 1780) India and the Far East.

The documents are chiefly unbound business papers (in bundles, some original) and mostly dated between 1754 and 1898, together with a few family papers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and photocopies of items removed for sale in the late 20th century.

Records of E Dent and Company Limited, clock and watch makers. The archives in this collection are the surviving business records, covering mainly the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are primarily the records of the Strand and Royal Exchange shops - only Ms 18026 and 23823-4 relating to M. F. Dent, 1856-1920, appear to have survived.

Records of G Street and Company Limited, bookseller, newsagent and stationer. The earliest records of the firm date from 1865. There are some earlier share certificates, 1825-54, but these appear to have belonged to John Leathwait, presumably a predecessor of Leathwait and Simmons, an advertising agency and newspaper supply firm, which Streets took over in 1918.

There are also a few records of subsidiary companies : EC Advertising Company Limited/G. Street and Co. (Provinces) Limited (Ms 33953); Streets Public Relations Limited (Ms 33954); Lionel Jackson and Partners (Ms 33955) and W Hopwood and Company (Ms 33956).

Records of Gabriel, Wade and English Limited, timber importers and merchants, including annual reports, financial accounts, sales ledgers and daybook, records of timber imported, property deeds, and photographs of tree-felling, logging and timber constructions.

Records of Harrisons and Crosfield Limited, traders in tea, coffee, rubber, timber, chemicals, and other agricultural products. The catalogue includes: corporate records (including articles of association, agreements, minutes and annual reports and accounts); share records; internal administration records (including directories of operations, directors' and general letter books); accounting records; operational records (including reports on estates); branch records (including correspondence and accounts); insurance department records; papers concerning the careers of directors; staff records; premises and property records; historical notes, photographs and plans; records of subsidiary companies, and companies for which Harrisons and Crosfield acted as secretaries and/or agents.

The archive includes records relating to Harrisons and Crosfield's activities as secretaries and/or agents for other companies. As these records were generated as part of Harrisons and Crosfield's role as secretaries and/or agents for another company, they have been catalogued as records of that particular company. However, they comprise correspondence and other papers of the head office of Harrisons and Crosfield, and supporting papers acquired by Harrisons and Crosfield (e.g. memoranda and articles of association, and annual reports and accounts) to assist in that role. The records of the companies for which Harrisons and Crosfield acted as secretaries and/or agents are arranged so that each company is followed by its subsidiary companies (if any).

Records of the business of Holtzapffel and Company, 1794-1928, together with some personal papers of members of the Holtzapffel family, 1788-1847, and of Johann Georg Deyerlein (J. J. Holtzapffel's partner), 1786-9. The archive comprises financial and property records, a pedigree of the family and notes about purchasers and susequent owners of the lathes including a register of lathes made by Holtzapffel and Co between 1798 and 1928.

William MacKinnon and Company records comprise: partnership deeds, 1919-25 (Ms 27849); and copy minute of an agreement, 1885 (Ms 27850).

The records of Joseph Preston and Sons, watch, clock and chronometer movement makers, comprise two volumes containing descriptions of parts c 1890-5 and 1892-1914 (Mss 14558, 14560), a cash book 1893-1904 (Ms 14545) and a bank pass book 1907-12 (Ms 14559).

Records of Kleinwort Benson Group and its predecessors including Kleinwort, Sons and Company relating to the merchant bank and its clients across the world.

The collection consists of a comprehensive series of business records with archives of constituent predecessors, acquired companies and interests. They include partners' and staff papers, operational materials, accounting and financial records, client records and staff and property papers. The records relate to company origins, partners and staff, clients and business concerns across the globe since the 19th century.

Highlights include Kleinwort, Sons and Company's 'subject files' (series reference CLC/B/140/KS04/03) which contain reports and correspondence concerning business ventures, proposals and clients. They document global business concerns and provide a valuable insight to the working practices of the company. Files document issues faced by the firm and its clients in the early to mid-20th century clients including declined international business proposals, fraudulent and enemy debts arising during times of war.

Other highlights are partners' letter books which record their outgoing correspondence discussing both business and family matters. An example is a letter by Herman Anton Andreae in 1915 on his views in support of the decision to establish conscription (enforced enlistment) in the recruitment of soldiers in the First World War (CLC/B/140/KS02/03/002).

The earliest business records are those of Sharps Pixley Limited and its predecessors Sharps Wilkins and Pixley and Abell (CLC/B/140/SP01 to 06). These include monthly ledgers from 1796 (CLC/B/140/SP03/03) and other bullion dealing series (CLC/B/140/SP04/01).

Papers of the Reconstruction and Planning Committee of the London Brewer's Council, comprising files of correspondence and reports relating to the distribution and redevelopment of public houses in the Greater London area, 1944-86, with a box contents list and card index.

Records of Morgan Grenfell and Company Limited, merchant bankers, and their predecessors; comprising ledgers, journals, letter books, correspondence and other papers.

Access to all the records is restricted to persons with written permission from the depositor (contact details may be obtained from a member of staff).

Business and social correspondence of Edward Oates, attorney, of Leeds and Furnival's Inn.

The records of PW Flower and Sons, merchants, concern the company's trading interests and property investments, and the affairs and investments of the Flower family (see CLC/B/173/MS19469 for a Flower family tree) and of other families with shared or related interests; they include the papers of various trustees by whom some family and business activities were administered.

The papers include foundation papers; minutes and agendas (except signed Board and Committee minutes which are retained by the bank); annual reports and accounts; financial and taxation records; papers relating to branches and agencies; agreements; papers relating to shareholders and investments; correspondence (including a large series of letterbooks for Standard Bank of South Africa); statistics; photographs; publicity material; administrative records and original banknotes and cheques.

Papers of Wallace Brothers and Company Limited, East India Merchants, bankers and London agents, later known as Wallace Brothers and Company (Holdings) Limited. Most of the records emanate from the core business of the Wallace Brothers partnership and its successors; but some emanate from the business of associated or subsidiary companies which were based in London. The latter include the records of Wyer and Hawke, London agents of Bombay Company Limited, who operated from the London office of Wallace Brothers between 1912 and 1968.

The archive does not hold the papers of Wallace Brothers' associated or subsidiary companies based overseas. No lists of the papers of these companies are held, and their whereabouts and accessibility are unknown. However the archives transferred to Guildhall from Wallace Brothers' London office include a considerable amount of information about the activities of many of these companies, including numerous copy and original documents sent to London by the companies concerned.

Besides papers created or received in the course of business, the Wallace Brothers archives include some memoirs of partners, directors or members of staff, and notes of research into the history of Wallace Brothers and its associates and subsidiaries.

The business papers date from 1862 to 1989, and relate to all aspects of Wallace Brothers' operations, although few banking records are held, and only formal business records survive from the period ca. 1966-1989.

Access is subject to a 45-year closure period (70 years in the case of personnel records). Annual reports and other published documents are not subject to closure.

Administrative papers including material relating to the incorporation of the companies, correspondence to and from suppliers and clients, and details of products and processes at the Avondale Tannery; financial papers including records of sales and purchases along with accounts from Herst, Leading Leathers and Avondale and credit reports of companies they dealt with; and publications and ephemera including directories on the leather trade and surveys of the shoe industry. Also a short series of samples of leather from Herst Leather Corporation as well as samples from Buenos Aires.

Records of J Lyons and Company Limited, food manufacturers and caterers comprising a 'Nippy' notebook belonging to Ethel Fage, dated to the 1930s. 'Nippy' was the nickname given to waitresses at Lyon's Corner Houses, who wore distinctive uniforms.

Records of Ind Coope Limited, brewers, 1850-1985. This collection contains corporate records including trading and supply agreements with other organisations such as Wembley Stadium, Pleasure Foods Ltd and various public houses; papers relating to loans and papers relating to income bonds.

Also documents relating to individual public houses and off-licences in Kensington, Poplar, Woolwich, Stepney, City of London, Holborn, Islington, Hackney, Lambeth, Westminster and Newham.

Records of Curtis Nicholson Limited, brewers, 1938-1958. This collection comprises the Memorandum and New Articles of Association for Curtis Nicholson Limited and a Board meetings minute book for Mile End Distillery Company Limited.

Records of Taylor Walker and Co Ltd, brewers, 1759-1972. This collection contains corporate, staff, premises and miscellaneous records. Corporate records include minutes of directors' meetings, articles of association and copartnership, registers of seals and supply agreements. Staff records include minutes of Employees Representative Committee meetings. Premises records include early title deeds for brewery premises as well as for individual public houses and mortgage records. The miscellaneous series comprises an album of advertising cuttings.

Each company collection contains corporate records which can include minutes of meetings, memoranda and articles of association, registers of directors and members and corporate agreements. Meux's Brewery Company Limited has a large collection of premises records including early title deeds, mortgage agreements and schedules of properties. There are numerous items of interest including legal papers relating to a court case between Meux's Brewery and the Marquis of Aylesbury circa 1902 (LMA/4435/A/01/011) and a complete set of end of year accounts 1931-1984 for Claude-General Neon Lights (LMA/4435/F/009).

This collection contains records from several business types, breweries, gin distillers (J and W Nicholson and Company Limited), neon light manufacturers and sign makers illustrating the wide variety of functions carried out by Allied Breweries and it's companies.

Records of John Lovibond and Sons Limited, 1896-1973. This collection comprises corporate records including minutes of Directors' meetings and General meetings, registers of shareholders, articles of association and a register of mortgages and charges.

Corporate records of Whitbread and Company Limited, brewers, including minutes of various corporate meetings (1889-1977), articles of association, partnership documents covering all major partnership agreements including the original agreement between Mr. Whitbread and Mr. Sewell dated 1761, documents relating to the establishment of the limited company including reports and property valuations, papers regarding Company shares, trusts, agreements and patents, contract books, directors' fees journals, registers of seals (1890-1979), royal warrants (1927-1973), policy documents and Company correspondence.

Also included are a substantial collection of managing director Sir Sydney Nevile's papers covering not only all aspects of his work at Whitbread but also his other commitments such as the Institute of Brewing and the Brewing Advisory Committee.

Sales records of Whitbread and Company Limited, brewers, including beer returns (1903-1959), complaints books (1925-1952), excise books (1935-1976), export ledgers (1953-1957), sales and nominal ledgers (1790-1821), estate trade books (1889-1979, these include both public and private trade along with records of the bottling stores), off-licenses and Company interests arranged by region. Also includes summaries, estimates and other sales statistics from across the Company together with papers from the Take Home division.

Production records for Whitbread and Company Limited, brewers, including papers covering all aspects of the production process such as brewing books for ale (1834-1969) and porter (1804-1976), brewing manuals from the 1960s, Head Brewer's reports, butt books (1925-1937) and fermentation books (1802- 1839). Also included are purchase ledgers and stock books for raw materials (1746-1971), sample and sediment reports (1913-1920) and papers relating to transportation and maintenance of the plants including a horse book (1881-1950) along with documentation on general production statistics.

Furthermore a complete series of notebooks belonging to F.G.S Baker are available running unbroken from 1899 to 1925.
