Manuscript transcription, [1650-1700], of a late medieval prose chronicle giving an account of the Battle of Ransbeek (1143), in which the lords of Grimbergen (Limberg?) were defeated by the guardians of Godfrey III, Duke of Lothier (also known as the Duke of Lorraine or Brabant). The manuscript is entitled 'Comment ceux de Brabant et de Grimburghe eurent moult forte at grande baittaille l'un contre l'autre aupres de Grimburghe en plain champ'.

'I cannot say that I have any special knowledge of the matters that are proposed to be dealt with by the London University Bill. But the Bill has been introduced by the Duke of Devonshire, as the head of the Department which is concerned with it, on behalf of the Government I cannot do anything in opposition to my colleague. Correspondence and papers of Bellot. The papers represent and illustrate the activities of Bellot's academic life as well as his personal one. There are letters to his family describing his schooldays at Bedales School up to his involvement with University College, Ibadan and his appointment to the Vice Chancellorship of the University of London.

The papers can be divided into three series: papers relating to his involvement in teaching and governance at the University of London, his personal papers that document his relationship with his fellow historians and his family; and papers created in the process of his historical research.

The official papers include case-files relating to: academic policy, University College, Ibadan, Westfield College, Senate committees, Board of Study in History at the University of London, Higher Education in Africa, and Library Policy.

His personal papers include: correspondence (1898-1968) with fellow historians (such as Albert Frederick Pollard, Thomas Frederick Tout, Robert Arthur Humphreys and J.E. Neale), members of his family, and other friends and acquaintances; family photographs; newspaper-cuttings; domestic account-books; diaries, records of his activities at Lincoln College; curriculum vitae; and travel notebooks.

The papers documenting Bellot's academic activities and historical research include: drafts, off-prints and notes for various works, including some unpublished; correspondence with his publisher, The Athlone Press; bibliographical and lecture notes; and the obligatory historical notes on areas of American History, economics and obituaries.

Account book kept by John Moore, a bellows-maker of the parish of St John, Bristol, 1777-1795, the first section containing household and business expenses, the second giving details of sales, with names of customers and values of orders.

Letter from Jeremy Bentham of Queen's Square Place, Westminster to J H Carr, 11 May 1820. Referring to a visit to be made by John Stuart Mill to Paris. Bentham proposes to use Mill ('a young friend of mine') as the bearer of a conveyance. Only the signature and a postscript are in Bentham's hand.

3 letters from Mrs Bentham of Ryde, [Isle of Wight], 3 letters to Richard Wilson, Esq, of 47 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, 1816-1818. Enquiring about payments of money to her as she has very little, and her rheumatism is the cause of heavy expenditure on doctors' bills; the doctor had charged 10s 6d a visit and had advised her to move to Bath rather than risk another winter on the Isle of Wight. She had received a quarterly payment of £25 from a Charles Bacon, withdrawn for the year 1817-1818. Enquiring about payment from Mr Bentham [?her husband], to be arranged through Sir James Graham, and about money owing to her from 3 shilling stock, for which she has apparently waited 10 years. Manuscript abridgment of the Bible, entitled 'Explication abrégée de tous les livres et chapitres de la sainte bible avec des nottes sur quelques antilogies et idiotismes d'icelle', and based on the works of late 17th and early 18th century French theologians such as Richard Simon, Isaac-Louis Le Maistre de Sacy, Nicolas Le Tourneaux, and Adrien Baillet. The abridgment was made by the compiler for his son, probably in Lyons, France. The monograms JUAT and AB:RF appear frequently throughout the manuscript.

Three leaves, foliated 289, 294 and 300, from a dismembered Latin Bible of Parisian workmanship, possibly from the Carthusian monastery of Val-de-Benediction in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, France. The leaves contain the texts of Jeremiah 50.3 to 51.18, Baruch 2.11 to 4.25 and Ezekiel 12.7 to 14.21. The fragments are dated to c1250, and there are marginal and interlineal notes in 13th or 14th century hands. With this manuscript are photocopies of two leaves from the same manuscript, from the collection of Dr B. Barker Benfield, sold at Sotheby's on 14 Dec 1978.

Manuscript Latin Bible dating from the early 13th century, being the first volume of a set, and containing the Books Genesis to Ruth preceded by a commentary. The manuscript is the work of several hands.

'for the Judges hand to passe the fyne', and expenses for a journey to Mr John Cox at Gloucester.

Nine printed bills of lading, completed in manuscript, for ships bound for Marseilles, including those for Le Décidé bound from Salonika, 1728; St Jean l'Évangéliste, from Istanbul, 1733; Le Benjamin, from Smyrna, 1763; Sainte Marie, from Port Maurice, 1765; La Fortune, from St Pierre, Martinique, 1765; La Napolitaine, from Naples, 1778; L'Aimable Marguerite, from Smyrna, 1779; S. Giovanni Battista, from Genoa, 1787 and 1788. Also includes a similar bill of lading for La Vièrge de Grace, bound from Marseilles to St Malo, 1729. Merchandise carried included raw cotton, yellow wax, fish, oil, vinegar, soap, coffee and silk.

1. Sale of 4/64 share of the barque Charlotte for a consideration of £675, by Philip Nelson, shipowner, to Henry Gardner, produce broker, both of Liverpool, 1 Jun 1866.
