Lecture notes, case notes and abstracts of printed works compiled by Lyon Falkener in various professional positions, 1861-1948: most importantly as locum tenens at Claybury Asylum and the Western Fever Hospital, Fulham, and as Assistant House Surgeon at the Metropolitan Hospital, London. A few personal items, largely testimonials and photographs supplement these, together with medical papers by Falkener. Falkener's later career as a general practitioner at Icart, Guernsey, is represented by a collection of his prescriptions.

Two volumes entitled 'Collectio plantarum nostratum et pro parte exoticarum quae in statu vivo et naturali depictae sunt' containing in all 200 water-colour drawings of plants, with description in Latin, made by Josef Foerchtl 'Pharmacopoeus' of Cologne, with his signature on a fly-leaf in each volume. Research notes and drafts relating to two major works by Fraser-Harris. MSS.8109-8112, 8114-8120 and 8122 relate to the history of antisepsis and the essay 'Antiseptics before Lister: a historico-medical survey', which was the Prize Essay in the History of Medicine, University of Glasgow, 1932/3. MSS.8236-8255 and 8968-8989 relate to The History and Lore of Cymric Medicine, a proposed Wellcome Historical Medical Museum study that was never published. Wellcome and Fraser-Harris died close to one another and the momentum of the project was lost.

The collection consists of Minutes of Committee Meetings and Annual General Meetings of the group from 1961-1987. There is also a large scrapbook detailing the activities and workings of the group at the hospital. The scrapbook contains newsletters, newspaper cuttings, thank you letters from staff and patients, photographs of events, and other ephemera.

Copy letter from the Matron of Friern Hospital, Mrs A M Blythe, 1941, describing the reception of mothers and babies from the City of London Maternity Hospital after that hospital was severely damaged by bombing, and the treatment and experiences of air raid casualties.

Research papers of Diana Gittins, 1905-1998, for her book Madness in its Place: Narratives of Severalls Hospital, 1913-1997, (London: Routledge, 1998), including tapes and transcripts of interviews with staff, ex-patients and patients, and background information on the hospital.

Unpublished lectures, articles and reports from Godber's time as Chief Medical Officer onwards form the bulk of this collection, but his wider career is represented by such papers as a draft of his 1944 'Hospital Survey of Sheffield and East Midlands Area' and published articles spanning over 50 years from 1942 to 1995. Although the collection does not include Godber's official papers from his various appointments or his personal papers, it nevertheless conveys a strong impression of his personality, energy and breadth of interests throughout his career. Godber's papers at the Ministry of Health and the Department of Health and Social Security were left almost entirely for his successors, to be transferred as appropriate to the Public Record Office.
