Personal papers of Hartley Booth, MP. The majority of the archive is concerned with Hartley Booth's parliamentary career. LMA/4021/01 relates to Booth's parliamentary responsibilities, in particular European affairs. In addition there are files containing correspondence and background material which relate to Private Members' Bills promoted by Booth. LMA/4021/01 also contains subject files on national issues that emanated from constituents' cases.

LMA/4021/02 contains constituents' correspondence and case files as well as subject files relating to local issues. LMA/4021/03 contains Conservative Party material and subject files which relate to the period when Booth was a prospective parliamentary candidate. These files relate to both local and national issues.

As the collection consists of parliamentary and constituency material, there is a closure period of 30 years. There is no closure period on the published material in LMA/4021/04.

The records of the London Liberal Party are of interest to anyone wishing to study local and/or national politics with reference to London. The working mechanisms of the LLP and achievements of its staff can be assessed, whilst the varying fortunes of the Local Associations and Liberal Party as a whole can be observed. Much of the material gives a fascinating insight into a range of London-wide and national issues, both familiar and contemporary. The records can also provide a useful commentary on the activities of the Greater London Council, Inner London Education Authority and others.

Records of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, 1760-2002. The archive is central to the history of the modern Jewish community in Britain. It covers virtually every facet of Jewish life in Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries - assimiliation, education, political emancipation, Shechita, anti-Semitism. The archive is particularly interesting on the conditions of Jewry outside the UK - there is a lot of information, for example, on the rise of fascism in mainland Europe in the 1930s and the Holocaust.

Papers of Sir William Wordsworth Fisher. This small collection of memoranda and letters, 1912 to 1936, consists of Fisher's ideas and opinions on policy rather than of material closely related to his career. The subjects covered include First World War operations, antisubmarine warfare, the Disarmament Conference, 1929 to 1930, comments on Invergordon, 1931, and papers concerning relations with Egypt and the Fleet in the Eastern Mediterranean, 1919 to 1922, and in 1936.

Over 3,000 periodical titles are held dating from 1745, some in single issues, but many in complete or representative runs. The Periodicals Collection brings together academic, popular and campaigning women's journals in one location and gives a unique insight into periodicals published about, for and by women. Titles range from commercially-produced popular magazines (Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan), to academic quarterlies (Gender and History, Feminist Review), organisational journals (One Parent Families, National Association of Women Pharmacists), special interest publications (Executive Black Woman), and older titles such as the English Woman's Journal. Many of these titles are not held in other research collections. The non-commercial nature of many of these periodicals with limited self-published print runs, resulted in periodicals that were issued irregularly, on poor quality paper and often only selectively deposited with the main copyright libraries.

COMMERCIALLY PUBLISHED

The Library's collection of commercially published magazines, a key resource for research into social history and popular culture, begins with the Ladies' Almanack of the 1740s and documents women's fashion and domestic concerns from runs of the Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine, The Queen, Ladies' Magazine, Ladies Monthly Magazine and Lady, Gentlewoman, in the 19th century; Home Chat, Woman's Weekly, Woman, Woman's Own, Honey,, Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire in the 20th century; Grazia, Glamour and Easy Living of more recent years. Also included are some magazines aimed at girls and young women such as The Girls' Own Paper, Petticoat, Just 17 and Jackie.

FEMINIST AND CAMPAIGNING

At the heart of the Periodical Collection are the women's campaigning journals and feminist periodicals. The collection of feminist periodicals at The Women's Library is unrivalled in its extent and breadth. It begins with the English Woman's Journal of the mid-19th century, and continues with titles such as The Young Women and includes complete runs of titles such as The Women's Penny Paper, the Woman's Herald, Victoria Magazine, the Woman's Signal, the Woman's Leader, Englishwoman's Review, Englishwoman, Freewoman, Time and Tide, Woman's Gazette, and Shafts all of which were key to the development of feminist theory and progressive ideas.

SUFFRAGE

The Library's extensive collection of suffrage periodicals is central to the study of women's rights in the 20th century, titles including Votes for Women, Common Cause, Woman's Dreadnought, The Vote, the Women's Suffrage Journal, Women's Franchise, the Suffragette Newssheet, the Independent Suffragette, Britannia, and the Suffragette as well as titles such as the Anti-Suffrage Review.

WOMEN'S LIBERATION MOVEMENT

The collection of journals documenting 'second-wave' feminism in the UK includes complete runs of titles such as Spare Rib and Trouble and Strife and near complete runs of other liberation titles such as Red Rag, Shrew, WIRES, Outwrite and the London Women's Liberation Newsletter. Regional involvement was an integral part of the movement and this is charted through a number of regional titles including Brighton and Hove Women's Liberation Group, Edinburgh Women's Liberation newsletter, Leeds Women's Liberation newsletter, Leicester Women's Liberation newsletter, Manchester Women's Liberation newsletter and Norwich Women's Centre newsletter.

CONTEMPORARY FEMINISTS

The periodical holdings continue to document the development of contemporary feminism, sometimes referred to as 'third wave', with titles including Verve and Subtext. Additional contemporary feminist publications can be found within our 'zine' collection (dating from 2002).

WOMEN'S ORGANISATIONS

Periodicals created by women's organisations, networks and campaigns. These can include weekly or monthly newsletters and magazines aimed at members, quarterly and annual journals aimed at members and a wider academic audience, and annual reports aimed at a wider audience. Given the short life of many campaigning organisations, their newsletters and bulletins often provide the main record of their activities. Few of these publications are held elsewhere, and they are only selectively deposited with national collections, organisations include: the Fawcett Society, National Council of Women, The National Federation of Women's Institutes (Home and Country), Townswomen's Guilds (The Townswoman), UK Federation of Business and Professional Women, Girls' Friendly Society, Executive Black Woman, Catholic Citizen and National Association of Women Pharmacists document women's efforts to come together to improve the quality of their lives.

Papers of Scott Dunbar, [1977-1984], largely comprise letters from Iris Murdoch to Dr Scott Dunbar and copies of his work. Letters from Iris Murdoch to Dunbar raise issues including religion, politics, structuralism, philosophy and also more personal matters including her mother's illness. The collection also includes an itinerary listing a series of ten lectures to be given by Iris Murdoch in October 1982 at the University of Edinburgh, the Gifford Lectureship in Natural Theology entitled 'Metaphysics as a guide to morals', possibly attended by Dunbar and a photocopy of a letter from Scott Dunbar to Murdoch answering a question at length: 'why are gay bars so sad?'.

The collection also contains letters from other individuals to Dunbar including Duncan Averbach, 1989, discussing Dunbar's thesis and the difference between the human being and person; letter from Theodore Brotsis, enclosing a photograph of Theodore, 1986; published works by Dunbar including 'On art, morals, and religion: some reflections on the work of Iris Murdoch', Scott Dunbar, Religious Studies, Vol 14, No 4, 1978; typescript copies of works including 'Alcoholics Anonymous and Alcohol Dependency' Part One and Part Two and handwritten notes, presumably by Dunbar, including notes titled 'IVF and all that' and lecture notes including 'The Iliad Lectures'.

The Parkes family deeds are also part of the collection, consisting of family deeds, subsidiary title deeds, grants of mineral rights, deeds held as Trustees, and miscellaneous. The deeds are dated 1634-1800 and the correspondence is dated 1801-1865.

Rees' papers on George Orwell, 1949-1963, relating to his role as literary executor include correspondence and papers, some relating to Orwell's death, adopted son Richard, and proposed posthumous publications, and including material relating to his wife Sonia; papers on the George Orwell Archive Trust; typescript transcripts of poems Orwell contributed to the Adelphi, 1933-1936; two book reviews by Orwell, 1943-1944.

Rees' papers on Simone Weil largely comprise translations, typescripts and proofs for Rees' publications on Weil. There are also some writings by Weil; a photograph of her, 1942; letters to Rees from Weil's mother and brother, André, and other correspondence on Weil, 1958-1970; press cuttings on Rees' publications on Weil.

Rees' papers on R H Tawney, relating to his role as literary executor, include correspondence and papers of Tawney; Rees' correspondence on Tawney, largely dating from 1960-1970; correspondence and papers relating to the sale of Tawney's belongings and his will, with other personal documents relating to Tawney and his wife; correspondence relating to the disposal of Tawney's collection of books on economic history, 1952. The correspondents include a number of prominent literary and other public figures.

Manuscript volume containing a treatise by Marc Antonio Cartagna, 14 May 1651, giving political and economic advice to the Venetian Republic which could result in a large annual income, entitled 'Consiglio politico economico proposito...alla serenissima Reipublica di Venetia per stabilire un'entrata annua perpetua di grossissima somma di ducati, con notabilissimo benefico publico e privato'.

Six letters relating to the proposed Provisional Committee to create a United Nations University Institute, Nov 1942, addressed to Harold Richard Goring Greaves (subsequently Professor of Political Science in the University of London); and six other letters relating to lectures arranged by the Centre for Studies in International Affairs, 1943-1951. The letters are as follows:

1. Letter to Greaves from Eduard Benes, President of the Czech Republic, 16 Nov 1942. 'I have received and read with much interest your letter of 10th November in which you furnish me with particulars of your Provisional Committee for creating a United Nations University Institute in London. I note that amongst those with whom you are in touch is Dr. Slavik, our Minister of Education, as well as Dr. Ripka and Dr. Císar;. These gentlemen will, I am sure, let you have their views on the project from the Czechoslovak point of view.We have also in England a Czechoslovak Association of University Teachers, who will certainly be most interested in the idea. For myself, as a former Professor of Sociology, I naturally welcome any effort to promote understanding between university teachers of different nationalities. At the present epoch especially such association is of outstanding importance'.
2. Letter to Greaves from John Gilbert Winant, United States Ambassador, 16 Nov 1942. 'Thank you for your letter of November 12th telling me about the suggestion for the establishment in London of an International University Institute. I was interested in this and would like to attend the meeting to be held at the British Academy on Monday November 23rd. Unfortunately I have a previous engagement at that time and am sorry I cannot be with you. I would appreciate, however, your keeping me informed concerning any plans which may be decided upon in this matter and I am gratified for your courtesy in writing [to] me'.
3. Letter to Greaves from (George) Gilbert (Aimé) Murray, 17 Nov 1942. 'I am afraid I cannot come to the meeting at the British Academy on November 23rd, and I am still not quite clear in my mind about the purpose of the International University Institute. Of course I can see that there is great danger that all over the world intellectual values will be thrust aside and the whole intellectual side of life undervalued and neglected. This is partly the deliberate influence of both Nazism and Communism. If the International Institute is to be concerned with the preservation of these intellectual values, I can see important work for it'.
4. Letter to greaves from Richard Austen Butler, Board of Education, 8 Nov 1942. 'Thank you for your letter of 12th November...I should like to keep in touch with progress with this scheme but I shall be unable to attend meetings personally. I am, however, asking my Public Relations Officer, Mr. D.H. Leadbetter, to attend the meeting next Monday...'.
5. Letter to Greaves from Joseph Bech, Luxembourg Minister for Foreign Affairs, 18 Nov 1942. 'I am entirely in agreement with this scheme which I consider would be of immense value in helping to solve the problems of reconstruction which will arise in the near future and I am grateful to you for having invited me to take part in the launching of such an Institute. I, therefore, accept with much pleasure, your kind invitation to be present at the meeting on Monday, 23rd November, at the British Academy...'
6. Letter to Greaves from Ivan Mikhailovich Maisky, Soviet Ambassador, 20 Nov 1942. 'Thank you for your letter of the 12th November inviting me to attend the meeting your Provisional Committee are holding...which I regret I am unable to attend'.
7. Letter from Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands to Mr. Clow Ford, 23 Oct 1943, regarding a lecture series at the Centre for Studies in International Affairs. 'I am extremely sorry that owing to an important conference I am unable to attend the opening night on Tuesday next. I have asked General Phaff to represent me...'.
