Records of Improved Industrial Dwellings Company Limited, housing developer, 1863-1984. The records relate to company administration and to a much lesser extent, the tenants. The earliest registers in the collection, a register of Estates 1863-1896 is of particular interest as it includes estate accounts, block plans, mortality rates and coloured plans of dwelling type (c.1870). The records relating to Greencoat Properties Ltd and The Soho, Clerkenwell and General Industrial Dwellings Company Ltd include Directors Annual Reports and Accounts 1885-1976. The only register to name tenants is the Deposit Account Register, 1935-1970.

This collection consists of the working papers of Muriel Smith. They cover the period of the 1950's to the late 1970's when Muriel Smith was working at the London Voluntary Service Council and the Home Office before her retirement in 1979.

The papers include Registry Files consisting of a series of subject files relating to the early work of Muriel Smith from 1952 to 1967 and include files on the Central Housing Committee, the Kenilworth Study Group, Housing, Playgrounds and the Association of London Housing Estates; Community Development Project Files which cover the period 1959-1974 and are mainly concerned with Muriel Smith's work at the Home Office; Voluntary Service Unit papers; correspondence including letters to Ilys Booker (a friend and fellow community development worker); papers relating to The North Kensington Project, Association of London Housing Estates, Tower Hamlets, and the Danilo Dolci Fund; and material produced by Ilys Booker relating to projects that Muriel Smith was also involved in.

Personal papers of Millie Miller, Member of Parliament. The collection consists mostly of official parliamentary incoming and outgoing correspondence when Miller held office as MP for Ilford North. There are also maps, plans, brochures, and newspaper cuttings relating to housing in Stoke Newington from the 1930s, and during the late 1950s when Miller chaired the Housing Committee. The correspondence files are varied. Letters include those from; interest groups, including the International Planned Parenthood Federation, the Socialist Medical Association, the Married Women's Association, the Association of Jewish Women's Organisations in the UK, and National Council of Women of Great Britain; local authorities, including Camden and Redbridge Borough Councils and Waltham Forest Area Health Authority; businesses local to the Ilford North constituency, including Thorn Electrical Industries Limited; Ilford North constituents; and letters from other MPs and Ministers.

The material reflects Millie Miller's keen interest in the promotion of women's rights, her membership on various committees and councils, delivery of speeches to women's associations, and her campaigns against girl slavery in the sex industry, battered wives, and sex discrimination. The material also details Miller's involvement in the World Conference of International Women's Year 1975. The correspondence touches on the Government's relations with Israel and the difficulties facing ethnic minorities, particularly Jewish communities. A large proportion of letters relate to Miller's constituency in Ilford North, Redbridge LB, with particular reference to housing, immigrants, and the views of constituents on local and national issues.

Records relating to tenants can mainly be found in the registers of tenants (series LMA/4656/D/08) held for the following estates only: Brandon Street, Walworth; Draycott Avenue, Chelsea; Fulham Palace Road, Hammersmith; Lever Street, Finsbury and Pages Walk, Bermondsey. In the same series there is also an estate book for Snowsfields, Bermondsey which provides tenant details. Also held is Secretary's correspondence concerning compensation cases relating to named tenants (1913-1936) (LMA/4656/B/01/03/001). The records in the CLRO are thought to be one of the finest and most complete municipal archives in Europe. However, researchers may notice some substantial gaps and these merit an explanation. The majority of the records of the Freedom of the City prior to 1681 and the City's Cash accounts prior to 1632 were either destroyed in the Great Fire in 1666 or in another fire in the Chamber (the finance department of the Corporation) in 1786. Similarly, it is thought that a fire at the Sessions House in the Old Bailey in 1877 destroyed the early Sessions minutes and files, as well as the bulk of the supporting papers. The paucity of surviving Sheriffs' Court records for the medieval period is thought to be because these records were considered to be the personal property of a Sheriff, who might be called upon to produce records in order to account for his actions during his time in office long after his Shrievalty had ended. Similarly, it is thought the records of coroner's inquests have not survived in any quantity before 1788 because inquests were not held in a court building until relatively recently, and so the records of inquests were considered part of the personal papers of office holders rather than administrative records.

Records of the Tailors Benevolent Institution. Despite a few gaps in the minute books, the most regrettable being the absence of the first minute book, the records give a clear picture of the development of a trade benevolent enterprise. The gaps are in part compensated for by the survival of accounts and cash books from the foundation of the institution and by a diary for 1837 belonging probably to the first secretary. The records are in good condition.

Records of the Great Western (London) Housing Association, covering the association's creation in 1923 to its dissolution in 1990. They include a complete run of forty two volumes of minute books and annual reports.

Papers, 1892-1900, collected by the solicitors in the course of their work, comprising lease for a property in Shepperton, and agreements, mortgages, insurance policies and surveyor's certificates for premises in Willesden.

This collection consists of architectural drawings (on paper) of Kneller Hall, Twickenham, by George Mair, 1844-1848. The drawings of both First and Second Series bear the signatures: 'J.P. Kay Shuttleworth' and 'John Kelk'. In addition to the signatures all the drawings bear, in Kay-Shuttleworth's hand and following his signature, a date: 'Feb. 8. 1848' in the case of the First Series, and 'June 17 1848' in the case of Second Series. All the drawings bear, near Mair's inscription, the number 51/1844, which is perhaps his commission number or 'job number'. Moreover, all the drawings bear a circular stencilled stamp reading '1861 R.E. Office London' enclosing a number (either 6, 7, or 12).

MSS. 7502-7509 and 7511 form one chronological sequence, documenting cases from Williamson's general practice. 1883-1901.

MS. 7510 consists chiefly of patients from Winchester and other localities in Hampshire and seems to document work for the Bonchurch convalescent home. 1895-1897.

MSS. 7512-7513 consist of patients with tuberculosis and other diseases affecting the lungs, and presumably document work at the Royal National Hospital for Consumption. 1899-1900.

MS. 7514 documents child cases at the Grange convalescent home, sent from a variety of London hospitals (Evelina Hospital providing most cases; also Great Ormond Street, Belgrave, St. Bartholomew's, London and East London Hospitals). 1897-1899.

Numerous papers are inserted, either bound in between numbered folios or loose: these comprise temperature charts, correspondence, cuttings, photographs and so forth.

The papers are very extensive though there are some lacunae, probably attributable to Chain's many changes of workplace. The early biographical period is sparsely documented, there are sporadic gaps in the correspondence files, and there is no original documentation of the penicillin research at Oxford (although there are many historical accounts and much correspondence about the history of penicillin). The surviving biographical material provides documentation of the arrangements for Chain to live and work in Britain, later honours and awards and his musical interests, and family correspondence, photographs and press-cuttings. There are very substantial records of his later career at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and Imperial College, London, including his continuing contributions to biochemical problems such as carbohydrate metabolism, ergot alkaloids, edible proteins and aeration studies. The Imperial College material also contains records of the creation, administration, finance and architectural design of the Biochemistry Department, and developments in the Department after Chain's statutory retirement in 1973. Additional information about Chain's research is available in the documentation of his very extensive consultancy agreements and collaborative work with industrial firms such as Astra, Beechams and Rank Hovis McDougall, and records relating to government, grant-giving and charitable bodies such as the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research Campaign and Medical Research Council which contributed to the funding of his research. There is much material on Chain's lectures, addresses and broadcasts, and on his extensive travel on visits and conferences, which includes a substantial number of unpublished talks.

An exceptional feature of the Chain papers is the documentation of the large number of Israel and Jewish organisations with which he was associated, especially the Weizmann Institute of Science, where he was a governor for many years and had at one time considered taking up an appointment.
